Missouri Comets indoor soccer coming to Independence Events Center, will join Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League.

New Comets to call Independence Events Center home - Independence, MO - The Examiner

First comment on the KC star article sums up KC's "community spirit".

Why in meth-ependence?
YUCK

I will bet my next paycheck on which side of town that person lives on...

Independence is such a historic town with many of the area's best attractions. It has done what it can to rebuild its older areas like take over schools from KCMO while creating a pretty darn nice suburban area trying to keep up with sprawling tax abated shopping centers in much faster growing Blue Springs and Lee's Summit to avoid another Bannister Mall. Yet the entire time I lived there, the city had such a bad rap, joco people think it's ghetto and white trash. Yet the development in KCK is somehow just fine.

Calling the team the "Missouri" Mavericks would normally be pretty dumb IMO. Why not market the team to the entire metro. Then again, if people from other parts of the metro are intimidated by Indy, I guess it doesn't really matter.

Does anybody know if many people from outside of Eastern Jackson and Clay County went to Mavs games? I wonder if they actually do draw from the entire area and if so, if it has helped the image of Independence (or even all of east jax).

I find it odd how KCK is some how now god's country while anything Indy does is pretty much ignored, if not insulted. One could argue that Indy has done far more for the residents of their city than KCK has for theirs. At least the arena and bass pro and mall are not clear out on Route 7 near Buckner (like Route 7 near Bonner, nowhere near where most people in KCK live)....

They will start play in November and play 12 home games. Single game tickets will be between $8 and $35 dollars.

This is just another boon for the city of Independence. They continue to quietly rebuild a neat town over here. I have a few issues with it, but the improvements I've seen in just the last six years have been substantial. Every part of town is getting attention, though I would like to see more aggressive action to get business going in the north/northwest part of the city and along Noland north of 37th-ish.
The Square just keeps getting better.

I hate that I feel the need for a disclaimer here, but before head gets bitten off... the development in southeast Indy for the most part, does not take away anything from Kansas City proper or it's metro as a whole. Nor does it expand the existing boundaries in the slightest. Kansas City proper should be a home for nothing but top-level major league teams.
So at worst, Indy may have stole this soccer team from south Overland Park.

The Mavericks have no problem selling tickets and quickly forming a lively fan base, and I think the Comets will probably be the same way.

Will they bring back the disco music the 1980s Comets used to play before, after, and even during the games?

The later versions (years) of the Comets (and Attack) did .

It will never be like it was in the 80's. The Comets played in front of 16,000 people every night and were on live TV etc. The city went nuts over them while it ignored the NBA Kings. Pretty wild.

In 1984, the Kansas City Comets led all indoor sports teams in attendance including NBA and NHL teams.
