I am moving back to KC after living the past two years abroad. I landed a job in the Turner school district and am considering moving there as well.
I would like to know more about the area and if it might be a good fit for me and my family.
It would be for me, in my late 20's, my hubby in his early 30's and our baby, about to turn 1. We are a cross cultural family and a little more left thinking. I don't like the suburbs, I like things close together, and don't want to drive all over the place.
I was thinking Turner, but if Wesport isn't too far, maybe making the commute would be worth it. What is Argentine like, as I see that is close to Turner or what other areas would you recommend?

TIA

most people familiar with that area will tell you to find something in Johnson County like Lake Quivera or Shawnee. I grew up in the Quindaro Bluffs area so I would say Western Wyandotte county near the county line would have some cheaper housing. Also outside of 435 to the west of Wyco. Basehor or Piper would be nice to.

I would look into a some of the central parts of KCK first. Western KCK feels more rural than suburban to me, so if you don’t like things spread out, you won’t like western KCK.

Check out Southern KCK near the JoCo line or central KCK if you want something a bit more urban, yet not as urban or expensive as nice areas of urban KCMO are. Also Roeland Park might be a good option.

If you are Hispanic, Wyandotte County is a good place to live because it is the center of the Hispanic community in Kansas City. Argentine and Armourdale are the main Hispanic areas. Turner and Argentine are like small towns within KCK. Argentine is bigger and has more businesses and services.

If you want to rent or buy a house, maybe look at Turner, Argentine and the areas south of there to County Line Road. You might also look at Mission, Merriam, and Shawnee north of Johnson Drive between Quivira and Roe. There are some apartment complexes in that area as well as many smaller, older houses. There are also some apartment complexes along State Avenue and Parallel Parkway near Kansas City Kansas Community College. The commutes from those areas into Turner are easy.

Wyandotte County is heavily Democratic, so I don't think you will have any problems being liberal. You will not feel out of place if you are not white, because it's a majority non-white county.

I live in Roeland Park (actually my house is going on the market in a few weeks). It's a great area. Most of the homes were built in the early 1940's and 50's, so you have a mis-match of tudors, bungalows, ranches...pretty much any style you are looking for. And the prices are quite reasonable, averaging probably around $140k for a nice beginner home.

There are quite a few hispanics also that live in the area or across the county line in Wyandotte. There is also a new Lowes and Price Chopper on Roe Blvd. The Price Chopper really does a great job to catering to the hispanic community by carrying unique items.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
