I'm in the same boat. My family is in Cincinnati right now and DH is in the Navy, we relocate summer 2010 but only have a month to make our decision! I know nothing about Evansville, aside from the casino boat.

Congratulations to both of you!

For the most part, all areas of Evansville will be fine. My favorite areas are McCutchanville (I grew up there) and Newburgh, actually in Warrick County. Both areas are very safe, great schools, and there are also several great parochial schools to choose from. Another very popular area is the East side. Then again, if you like "in the city" living, the area around the Univeristy of Evansville is so beautiful and safe. Again, good schools. Really, if you get a chance, you should come in for a visit to see the different areas.

I'd be happy to help, if you're interested. Just send me a private direct message. I'm a real estate agent, but more importantly, I'm a native, I've lived far away for severals years oly to move back, and I can atest to the wonderful benefits of raising your family in the Evansvile area.

Best of luck to the both of you!!

not sure about the schools, but i'm sure those won't be hard to look up. there are a lot of nice places in evansville. there is also sort of an east/west side rivalry so some people will have preferences (i like the east side). in general lots of nice people here in evansville. personally, i think you should take a visit to see how the different areas strike you.

for downtown/eastside definitely check out the riverwalk/bike trail, maybe the children's museum, and/or art museum, and have some breakfast at the Coffee Cottage (family oriented across from UE) or coffee and a pastry at Penny Lane (a "hippy" hangout). evansville also has a great natural food coop (on washington street) call River City Food Coop. you can buy local farm produced eggs/meat/produce there (as well as an array of organic natural products). if you want to have a nice dinner Madeline's is fantastic. if you like Indian food Taj Mahal is awesome. also check out Wesselman Woods. i could go on but i really don't know what your interest are.

welcome.

My husband and I lived in Evansville for 15 years. It is a very city like atmosphere-we were both from more of a 'country like' environment. We lived on the southeast side of town. Basically, US 41 runs north and south dividing the city somewhat. Anything east of 41 is okay. North is more older families..alot of German heritage...money. East has more shopping areas, and is constantly growing. West also has alot of shopping areas and college kids. I would stay away from the downtown area, and also the southwest side of 41. As for schools, I subbed and student taught in many of these, the north, east, and west are the best. The best high schools are in the north and the west sides of town. If you look at which elementary schools feed into middle schools, and then into the high schools, you will get a good idea of what elementary schools you want your kids to go to. Personally, if I had a choice, I would live in the north section or the west side. If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer.

I do not live in Evansville but moved to Northern IN a couple of years ago. I found something out recently that I thought was interesting and I'm probably the last to know this. But I will share anyway....I did not realize the house shown on the Roseanne show is in Evansville. I am learning more and more about Indiana as time goes on and well..since I was a huge fan of that show I thought it was pretty cool the house was located in Indiana. The shows producer (I think) grew up in Evansville. I googled the house on street view and the area looks like a blue collar neighborhood. Does anyone live by this house? Do people drive by it constantly?

Northside of town ( Darmstadt, McCutchanville)- very clean and new however becoming very suburban and a little snobby and richy richy

Near Northside (north of downtown to NorthPark Shopping center) relatively rough, mostly domestic violence, not much outsider violence

Southeast (east of downtown, south of Lloyd Expwy, West of 41) Very rough, most of cities gang violence lives here

East ( East of 41, west of 164) overcrowded, exploded in the 70's and 80's so much parking lot construction that loose soil has lowered and the whole area floods in heavy rains. medium violence now that area is getting rougher ( except some old rich neighborhoods near memorial high school and off Newburgh Road)

Newburgh (East of 164) rich and snobby. white flight in the 90's and 00's when eastside started roughening, i hate Newburgh lol

Henderson, KY (south of the river) nice area one of the areas id reccomend to live. all is well except the high school is huge

Near Westside, Lamasco (west of downtown east of barker Ave)- Old affordable neighborhood that has kept its charm. close knit community. good high schools Reitz and Mater Dei. only area to avoid is right off St. Joseph Avenue. Reitz Hill is recommended

Far Westside (west of Barker Ave) close knit community but a little newer than Lamasco. Reitz and Mater Dei High Schools still so good schools. affordable. id probably reccommend the Far West Side over anything. some people say the Westside is clique and unfriendly but i grew up on the North Side and went to High School on the westside and loved every minute of it.
