Hi,

My wife and I are planning to move to Evansville, IN in a few months and I am doing some research on Evansville and its neighboring areas. I have been reading some of the old threads on this forum with mixed reactions about life in Evansville. I have lived in two major cities on the East coast and have a feeling that Evansville will be a big change. But the size of a city does not matter to me, what matters the most are its people. So I wanted to post some questions and see what response do I get from the people who live in Evansville or may have lived there at some point. I would like to know if Evansville is a safe place to live? are the people of Evansville friendly? Do they accept people from different cultures? What are some of the nicer areas to live? I read that Newburg is nice and safe. What other areas can I consider (I would like to rent an apartment or town house, $1000-$1300/month)? Is there a wait time to rent a property?

Thanks!

Evansville, like most every other city in the USA, has areas that are safe, and other areas that are not as safe. I used to live in a small house near the corner of Covert & Lodge in an area most people would deem more on the unsafe side, and never had a problem.

Yes, for the most part.

I never got the overriding sense that not being white was frowned upon in Evansville, though there are some boneheads there like any other place. Evansville is less diverse than a lot of places. I had a lot of middle-eastern professors at USI, they never expressed a problem with the folks in Evansville.

Newburgh is a nice town, it is fast becoming swallowed by suburban development along Hwy 66. If that is what you are looking for, you might want to stick to the southern third of Warrick County or the areas of Vanderburgh County along Green River Road and north of Lynch Road; and north of the airport along US 41. If you are more interested in living in the city of Evansville itself, you'll have to be more specific on what "nice and safe" means.

Thank you for responding to my questions! I am definitely looking to live at a place which has lots of activities restaurants, cafes, bars etc., in the vicinity. Are there apartments in the Evansville downtown area? Do people prefer living in downtown? Also, could you or anyone else on this forum suggest a realtor in Evansville.

Evansville Real Estate & Homes for Rentals in Evansville - Scripps Courierpress.com

I would look at those two sites for apartments. If you are looking for restaurants, etc., I think your best bet would be to look downtown and on the east side. The east side, you would be looking for something in zip code 47715, has most of the shopping and dining in Evansville. Restaurants tend to be chains in this area. It is very nice and safe, but it is also very developed/commerical. If you are not looking for that then that would be an issue.

There are some apartments available downtown. They don't tend to show up on websites like ApartmentGuide (I don't know why). Downtown is fairly quiet. It is mostly businesses and offices, so at night it slows down quite a bit. It's not as residential as the downtowns in major cities. That being said there are some restaurants (locally owned), bars, a convention center, casino, and an arena. I would consider downtown safe and would feel comfortable living there myself. The downtown zip code is 47708.

There is one other area that could work north of downtown along Franklin Street. There are some bars/restaurants, and I know there are apartments available as well.

If you're looking for bars/restaurants/activties, Newburgh is probably not for you. It combines a typical suburbian living and small town living, and it doesn't sound like that is what you are looking for. I would personally choose to live on the East Side of town. However, if you are used to living in a downtown area as opposed to an apartment complex, you should probably go with downtown. The reality is that it is probably going to be a big change for you. I would keep an open mind and learn to adjust to a slower paced lifestyle, which will probably be the case. The people are generally good and are nice.

I'm from southwestern Indiana, and I have lived in Evansville for a few years, so I am probably biased, but I do like Evansville. I am going to be moving in a few months for a job, and I am going to miss it.
