Has anyone else come upon a large snake about 2 1/2 feet long in their yard? This one looked like a Copperhead and was extremely aggressive---coiling up, hissing loudly, and acting like it was ready to bite. It was close to a public pool and a pond was nearby.

Here is this creature of Indiana nature. Again it is about 2 1/2 feet long and you can see the color and pattern on it. It appears to be well fed and not suffering from any vitamin deficiencies. It's personality though is deficient because it is very mean and nasty.

Never seen or heard of anything like that in Indiana. When I lived down south, they were much more common. Perhaps someone's pet that was let loose?

If I saw that in my back yard, I would run in the house screaming and crying like a young child.

I thought for sure that it was a venomous Copperhead when I first saw it in Hamilton County, especially because of its triangular shaped head, color and body markings. However, that cell phone picture was sent to the DNR and they identified it as a Northern Water Snake. Northern Water Snakes are reportedly common in Indiana and not poisonous but that was the first time I came upon one.

I would not want to get bitten by a Northern Water Snake because of the bacteria it can inject into a human being. I am quite sure that it could also carry rabies depending upon what it ate.

That reptile eats a lot of bugs and insects so it does serve a useful purpose. I would not want to kill it. Now, if it came into my home that would be a different matter.
