So I was stepping out into my backyard and saw a little black snake slither under my deck!

I absolutely freaked....I was getting ready to sit on a blanket in the yard with my grandchild.
I know it's more afraid of me than I of him. I know they are good for the eco-system and they serve a purpose, but, aaaaack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't seen a live snake here in Plainfield in two years. Sounds like it was a Corn Snake.

Nope. Juvenile corn snakes aren't black...could be any number of things, but most likely not venomous. Check out Snakes of Indiana's website...

harmless water snake perhaps? This is Indiana, don't worry, he is more afraid of you than you are of him. He'll eat spiders and mice so keep him around!

I bet that was a bit unsettling, for the snake as well as the humans.

Woa that's pretty cool!!

When I was a little boy out here in Plainfield they used to tell us to watch out for snakes when we were out in the grass. Now they say watchout for where the snakes used to be( rolls eyes) but seriously I haven't seen a snake around here in the longest time.
