My hubby is offered a contract to work in Greensburg for 5 years, we preferred:

1) to have an excellent School system for our kids ( from middle to complete High school ). Looks like Greenwood is an ideal place with high rating from Greatschools.net. Anyone has better opinion or experience raising kids about school system in the area within 50 miles radius of Greensburg ?2)

2) to buy than rent a single house in the area, again, within 50 miles radius of Greensburg. Which area has the stable housing value or better with potentially increasing trend of selling or resale ? - for my humble thinking, a decreasing value of a real estate is a no no for short term stay in Indiana.
Please note - huge Honda Plant(s) & its suppliers are coming to stay in Indiana, should it be a factor for economy booming in surrounding areas? If yes, except Greensburg who can tell what city or area would be benefitted from this ?

3) to buy new or newer single house - who is reputable home builder(s) in the area within 50 miles radius of Greensburg ?5)

4)As per FEMA data, Indiana is the 3rd state on the so called "Tornadoes alley" with damage caused by Tornadoes from last 100 years, which area within 60 miles radius of Greensburg was historically bombarded by Tornadoes touchdown ?????

We just wanted to find the best possible to make our life safer & easier for living in USA particularly Hoosier state. So your local expert opinions will be starting points for us to start the process of relocating !
Thanks for your help & much appreciated !!

If you want Greenwood, make sure you look at homes in White River Twp/Center Grove schools. We just moved to Columbus, which is within your radius, I believe and we are liking it very much so far. I have an incoming 2nd grader and kindergartner, so I can't speak very much regarding middle and high schools. You could also try New Palestine. Small town with excellent schools.

Welcome!

Hadonlee,

I have been a resident of Columbus Indiana for years. They have a wonderful school system from elementary to high school. I have two teenagers that have done very well in this school district. Columbus is a very reputable and safe place to live and has a little town feel with plenty of stuff to do. If you want a larger variety of things to do Greenwood and Indianapolis are about 45 minutes from here.
As far as the real estate market in Columbus, it is doing well. Homes in Columbus are getting about 94% of the list price. Of course right now with the Holidays upon us things have tapered off, but the beginning of the year should pick back up. Columbus has a lot of relocation activity due to Cummins. There are a wide range of homes from mature neighborhoods that range from $120's-$180's to new neighborhoods that range from $200's +. It all depends on where you want to live.
Good Luck in your search.

I know of a few areas near Greensburg which are very nice areas. That is where a majority of my family is from currently, so I know a bit. If you do not mind a bit of a commute you can go as far as Greenwood, but the other way, East, may be good as well. Batesville, IN is a very nice older community with a lot of heritage and increasing home values. It is only a 15 minute trip to Greensburg. It also depends on the size of school you are looking for. The schools in Greensburg are good schools as well, but these are smaller schools. Real estate values in Columbus have also been very strong. There is some very nice new construction and some older communities which have always been desirable. Columbus has many great features and wonderful architecture. It is also only a 25 minute trip to Greensburg, 40 minutes or so to Indy, and 35 minutes or so to the beautiful city of Bloomington.
Please let me know if you would like to hear more.
Best wishes on your decisions!

Hi and welcome to Southeastern Indiana!! First of all, I really think it would be worth your while to check out the schools in Batesville. It's about a 15-20 minute drive from Greensburg and has great public schools as well as a private elementary and high school. It's also very safe and a great place for families. There are as many options as you'd like when it comes to housing, and if you did decide to build, I recommend Shane and Trenkamp. What else... I've lived here for 25 years and although the tornado sirens will go off here, I have never seen one. I really hope you check it out, I think it would be a great place to send your children!

I have lived in Indiana nearly my entire life, except for a short stint in southern Virginia. Batesville has got to be one of the best small towns in America! The people are friendly, it is a beautiful place, it has wonderful schools, and the economy is still flourishing. The housing market is holding strong, at least better than most places. If you don't believe me, drive through some of the new subdivisions that are being built. There are dozens of new houses going up each week. It is one of those places where you will be welcomed and not want to leave. There is absolutely beautiful scenery around both Batesville as well. And did I mention it is only 45 min to either Cincy or Indy???

Hi, I would like to know more. I am interested in relocating from Texas to Indiana. I have my eye on Greenburg, Batesville, Shelbyville and any small town that does not have the traffic we do. Please tell me about the people in these places, the economy, housing and the weather. Also, if tornadoes are known to hit in these areas. I appreciate any info. Thanks for your time.

Hi. First of all, are you looking for one part of Indiana over the other. The southern part of the state differs from the northern part as well as Indianapolis. They are three differrent demographics. The northern part of the state has more snow, but it is also heavier populated than the South. However, there are nice quaint towns such as Wakarusa and Middlebury Indiana, around the Elkhart- South Bend metro. I live in Fort Wayne, which I really enjoy but I think you are wanting to live in a smaller town??? The economy is above average in Indiana, however, by no means is Indiana out of the trouble. Indiana is a big manufacturing state, and therefore it has taken a toll on the local economies. The housing is amazing compared to the rest of the states, as you can get the most bang for you buck pretty much anywhere, especially in the suburbs of Indy. Fort Wayne is also very affordable.
