I had a wood delivered on a couple of pallets and when the fence building guy moved it there were snakes all coiled up together.

Yep thats a Northern Watersnake. They do generally have an aggressive disposition and will bite when provoked. As mentioned they are not venomous and reptiles cannot carry or transmit rabies. They can leave a pretty nasty bite and their saliva contains a mild anticoagulant which causes the wound to bleed a little more than normal but they are not harmful to humans. I actually kept a few of these as "pets" while I was growing up. I lived in the "country" and catching snakes was way more fun than playing nintendo! The one in the picture is a very nice size one.

I have seen Northern Watersnakes on our property several times. Our most recent encounter with one was on the house. A bird nested on the curve of the gutter downspout. The snake slithered up to the nest and was eating the eggs.

We most frequently see Black Rat Snakes. It's not uncommon to see them in road. I've seen several that are at least 5 feet long. Sometimes smaller ones will end up in the pool which is why I NEVER clean out the skimmer area.

We typically find one or two snake skins a year near some landscaped areas of the house and often under a side porch area. I know they keep the mice away, but I'm always hesitant to do any weed pulling in these areas. Yuck!

Holy crap! I grew up in s. indiana & I've seen my share of copperheads & water moccasins but none of these guys.. I'm sure I'd remember!

Since moving to Florida though, I've become a lot less skiddish about critters... you have no choice in the sub-tropics, lol! You should see the snakes we have down here...

But the black snakes dont bother me anymore. They are great little guys- that eat the not so great little guys
