We have to go to Indiana soon and would really like to see the autumn trees. When do the leaves start changing colors and how long does it usually last?

In northern Indiana the leaves started changing in September. The sugar maple trees are usually the first to display fall color. In central and southern Indiana October into early November is good for peak color.

I'm not sure how good it will be this year since southern Indiana has been in severe drought for the last month. I'm hoping we see some great colors though.

Here's hoping!

Northern Indiana - is early October -

Central Indiana - is mid October

Southern Indiana - is late October.

Simple and easy to remember. Keep in mind though. From Indianapolis on north the state is very flat, but once you get 45 minutes or so south of Indianapolis it generally gets very hilly. So southern Indiana is a better place to enjoy the colors.

For the most part they last for two weeks. Although with the drought this year, I expect the colors to be a little muted

My Mother died the 1st week of Oct, 2003. When we drove up to NW Indiana, the leaves were just starting to change.

Mid/Central Indiana was already in the change, and Southern Indiana was just stunning at that time.

The drought will change things this year tho. Hard to tell what kind of Autumn we will have.

Thanks for all the info. We will be going to Brown county which I heard was one of the best for colors.

It's amazing ... just amazing. The touristy route is SR 46 from Columbus to Bloomington. But veer off of 46 to Lake Monroe on SR 446. Get a good map and go down into the winding roads. Have fun!
