Hello everyone, recently I turned down a job offer to work in Chicago, IL, due to the fact I just didnt feel comfortable moving to Northwest Indiana and did not desire to move to Chicago, IL. Currently I have an offer on the table to move to Evansville, IN. My wife, children, and I currently live in Fort Wayne, IN and love it. My children are in grade school. Is Evansville, IN comparable to Fort Wayne, IN? Are there any diversity issues.

These cities are somewhat comparable. Fort Wayne has definitely experienced more growth in the past couple of decades than Evansville, and with that comes advantages such as shopping/restaurants, schools, suburbs, better amenities, parks, etc.

Another benefit that Fort Wayne has over Evansville is the location. You are within a 3-6 hour drive to Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit, Cincinnati, Columbus, South Bend, Grand Rapids, etc.

Evansville would obviously have a little better weather in the winter, but not enough to make a moving decision in my mind.

Cost of living I imagine is roughly the same.

Evansville is a 3-6 hour drive from Nashville, St. Louis, Louisville, Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, Memphis, Chicago, etc. With all due respect to Detroit, Toledo, and South Bend, I think Evansville's location is a little more desirable.

Evansville's "suburb" of Newburgh is superior to anything in the Fort Wayne area.

Evansville's winter weather is more than "a little better" than Fort Wayne's. There are winters where Evansville sees only one snow event in a season. If you are not a fan of Fort Wayne's winter, and Evansville is an option, then yes, that would be reason enough to move down there.

Fort Wayne's shopping is no better than Evansville's.

However, anywhere along the Ohio River is particularly bad for those that have allergies, sinus problems, or asthma. Southern Indiana is filled with coal plants.

I thank everyone for your assistance. What about the general attitude of the population in Evansville? Is it a very "close minde, its been this way for years" type of area? I have found Fort Wayne to be diverse and "open minded" when dealing with different groups of people. I guess, Im always concerned about the image of the south. Sorry if the question seems silly.

I saw your original post and I know what you are trying to say. I really think you should either visit Evansville and decide for yourself, or stay in Fort Wayne.

The reason for this forum is to gather other's opinions. If I could simply cancel work issues and stay down there for 2 to 4 weeks to get a feel, I would and therefore would not have to ask the opinions of others. I desire to gather information from those willing to share and have experience. If you understood my question and desired not to answer it, that is more than fine. Thank you.

Well honestly if you find Fort Wayne open, which I don't at all, then Evansville probably won't be that bad. They had a democratic Congressman and mayor (I think). I have never been down there personally though.
