But what bothers me even more is the reflexive response by many well-meaning Americans that undocumented immigrants ought to “get in line and wait their turn.”
What these Americans don’t realize is that our immigration system is so broken that there is no line.
They must do what ANY one who wishes to come here legally must do. That is, return home and apply to come the right way.
They have to stop thinking they are somehow a superior race that is exempt from the laws. If a poor Haitian wishes to come to the USA, how should they do it? Or a poor Pakistani, Chinese, Romanian, Ethiopian and so on?
The entire world, not even the billions of impoverished people cannot simply move to the USA to solve all their problems. Everyone should be expected to follow the same process, that is the only way it can be at all fair.
And illegals should not feel they are entitled to a reward for breaking the laws in the first place.
Wasn't Broken when my wife entered legally..... Wasn't broken when we applied for a visa for her daughter to enter Legally.....
Why is it only broken for those who decide to disregard our immigration laws? No where is it written all have a right to enter our country at will.
No way. They have no respect for our laws. That means they have no respect for us. Why should we cut them slack when they have the same mentality of your common criminal. That mentality being laws are for everyone else.
And our immigration system is far from broken. We have decent legal immigrants -- a lot. More than any nation, far more than Mexico has. They managed to follow the laws, wait their turns, and be here legally.
The USA doubled it's population in just a few decades, mostly through massive immigration, if anything the immigration system is broken in the wrong direction. It might be time to consider how quickly we want to double our population again, and how we will supply the fuel needs and social needs of a rapidly growing government dependent population.
How do those Mexicans, etc. who immigrate legally playing it by the rules get into the USA?
Isn't it obvious? They must be broken too. Only broken people can use a broken system successfully. Or they must be idiots for not cheating our system.
Illegals need to return home as malamute said and apply to enter legally. If turned down? Oh well that happens.
It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE for a Mexican citizen to get a B2 tourist visa to visit the United States.
The application process is long, the fee is $131 USD. They have to get a Mexican passport first...about $100USD. Then they have to travel to Mexico City to the Embassy ,or to one of the consulates in Mexico...this can cost several hundred dollars. They have an appointment for an interview, but there are hundreds of people in line...so it takes hours. The interview is literally 1 or 2 minutes, and the great majority of the time the answer is "No." even wealthy Mexicans that have had visas in the past, travelled to the U.S. and returned when they were supposed to, are being denied new visas when they apply.
I think that summarizes the problem -- "there are HUNDREDS" in line but not really hundreds but hundreds of thousands, millions.
That does not justify anyone just deciding because of their race they have a right to just ignore the laws.
Or maybe instead of all fleeing Mexico they should consider making Mexico a better place to live? It really is absurd that all prosperity comes to a screeching halt when you reach our southern border, and Mexico is a very wealthy nation.

This in no way gives them the 'right' to enter the US in violation of OUR immigration laws. Accommodating Mexico should not be one of the goals of our immigration system.
It wasn't broken three years ago when I was at the BCIS.....there were about thirty people in the waiting area, of that there were two Canadians and the rest were a mixture of Latinos and Asians. Somehow they found a 'line', filled out the appropriate paperwork and did what it took to get here legally.
Is it hard to legally immigrate to the US. Yes. Should it be hard to immigrate to the US? Yes again. We do not want and never wanted other countries criminals. And we have the right to say no their entry. We also have the right to want immigrants who will add to this countries wealth, not take from it. We have the right as a country to want skilled immigrants and not those who have nothing to add to our society. Some people make the mistake of thinking that the US is in fact a welfare brood mare, here to suckle all the worlds poor. No, we are not. Never have been. It is a nice feel good concept though, isn't it? That somehow the US can and should take care of everybody who wants to come here. But economically we cannot do it. We are in debt to the tune of trillions of dollars (and yes thats due in part to the Iraq war, but the point is the debt is very real ) and we cannot help everyone. We need people who want to come here and add to our nation....economically, culturally, and yes even patriotically.
Sneaking under a fence, having anchor babies for free in hospitals, then waving the Mexican flag and demanding the rights of citizens while retaining loyalties to Mexico is not what we need, or want. It does not benefit the country as a whole.
So, yes, I hope it is hard to emigrate here. It should be.
