LDS Church donates furniture and bicycles to CSI Refugee Center

LDS Church donates furniture and bicycles to CSI Refugee Center

TWIN FALLS, Idaho. (KMVT/KSVT) - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in American Falls collected trucks full of furniture and bicycles for refugees in Twin Falls. The LDS church spent four weeks collecting these items to deliver to the College of Southern Idaho Refugee Center. Tuesday morning volunteers from the church and Wells Fargo unloaded trailers filled with beds, TV's and more. Some items are new and some are used, but they say it’s all in the name of God’s love.

The LDS do this all the time. After floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, fires and other disasters, they're always heading to wherever the folks need some basics while rebuilding their lives.

They have their own form of Goodwill Stores; Deseret Industries. Their stores provide all the goods they donate, and the church's own welfare system is highly organized, so it's easy for the church to respond quickly.

In times of emergency, they don't act alone; they organize with the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the organizations of other religions so that they all act cooperatively. Their church houses all have wireless communications with Salt Lake City, so if one of their churches is intact in a hard-hit community, this helps to organize and speed the relief response.

This is also done all the time on much smaller levels.
Families who have house fires or other bad stuff that destroy everything get fast help of the same kind. I've seen many instances like this.

While the religion has many controversial aspects, and I'm not a member, this is something they are very good at and have always done. I've always found this side of Mormonism to be admirable.

Default Being #12 isn't so bad.

From Investor's Business Daily:

"Best-Run States Are Heavily Republican, Study Finds", from the Mercatus Center.

The Mercatus Center at George Mason University does some really good stuff.

At a ranking of 12, that puts Idaho in the top quartile.

Best-Run States Are Heavily Republican, Study Finds | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD

Quote:
At the other end of the spectrum, except for Kentucky, the 10 worst states are all solidly blue. And all but two of the governors since 1947 have been Democrats.

Politicians, especially the “pragmatic” ones, are always talking about how they are just interested in what works. When it comes to keeping spending, debt and long-term liabilities under control, the place to look seems obvious.

The conservative approach of lower taxes and limited government is a winner, while big-spending liberalism invariably leads to financial ruin.

Default follow-on to the above post

Boring down into the Mercatus Center report:

Idaho | Mercatus

Quote:
On the basis of its fiscal solvency in five separate categories, Idaho ranks 12th among the US states and Puerto Rico for its fiscal health. Idaho’s fiscal position is strong. The state has between 2.68 and 4.08 times the cash needed to cover short-term liabilities. Revenues exceed expenses by 13 percent, producing a per capita surplus of $597. Net assets are 35 percent of total assets, and total liabilities account for 11 percent of total assets. Debt totals $1.34 billion. Unfunded pension liabilities are $13.97 billion, and other postemployment benefits (OPEB) are $107 million. These three items are equal to 25 percent of total state personal income

Gay Syrian refugee finds love and acceptance for the first time in Boise - Story

Quote:
One of his favorite stories to tell is of a woman he met on his first day heading into downtown Boise. Determined to learn the transportation system and make it on his own, Shadi headed down Curtis Street on his bicycle from the refugee resettlement group, and made it to 13th Street before realizing he was lost. He was scared to talk to a stranger for fear of being beaten, but he stopped a woman and showed her the map of where he was trying to go.

“She looked, and she grabbed my hand and walked with me across the street to where I was going and said, 'See this door? Good luck!'” Shadi explained. “And this was my first impression and first feeling about Boise and I just thought, 'God, I love this city.’"
