I'm pretty defensive of the brand and I'm not even a current owner! I've seen some ignorant/racist people call any Asian make a rice burner, this includes Honda/Toyota. I don't like the Elantra because it doesn't fit the class of vehicle I look for but I understand it as a very competitive product in its field.
Ummmm... I think you're going to have a hard time convincing anybody that calling a car a rice-burner is racist. Some Cavaliers are also referred to as rice burners, rice rockets, or tuners.
I wonder if it's sexist or something, to refer to a certain kind of motorcycle as a Crotch Rocket.
I rented a Hyundai Elantra and drove it across the state a couple of times. It was awful. I don't think they've heard of sound deadening, the seats were hard, the armrests in unusable locations, and the whole thing seemed tinny. If it were cheaper, I could understand. But there are better cars out there for the money.
Was that a new Elantra?
I'm not much into what Consumer Reports has to say, but I have heard good things about the new Hyundais and Kias. But I guess it doesn't matter a lot either way, because I'm not buying any brand of new car.

I can easily think of a large number of people who would agree that calling a vehicle a rice burner because it is of an Asian origin to be racist.
It was a 2008. Just unimpressive. It ran well and got pretty good mpg, though. Nothing to write home about.
I didn't get a chance to spend a lot of time with one but everything looked great for its intended price range. I certainly didn't get excited but there is nothing in its price range that would really get me salivating.
Or get a used 2008 Elantra for $10k (or less). The used car market changes things up a bit.
That still involves buying a sub-par car.
Also, thanks for pointing out the incredible depreciation for me.
