Agree - if time is almost the same - would pick Gulf Shores over S. Padre.

Port Aransas and environs are nearby, not too heavily congested, more of a "home atmosphere" than the tourist spots, including Gulf Shores. Gulf Shores was hit hard just after I left last time, before even cleaning up completely after the time before. I'm betting there are at least as many "blue roofs" there as there are still in southeast Texas. I grew up on tourist beaches (Dad was US Navy, and I've lived in Virginia Beach, Orlando, San Diego, and Spain and Italy... all on or near beaches) and Port Aransas is probably one of the more enjoyable, closer-to-oldtime beach areas around. I didn't notice much dirt or refuse around, but I will say it isn't as manicured as some ultra-tourist beaches.

With the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, including the whooping cranes, only 45 minutes away, Port A is a non-touristy place that's got a lot to do. If you prefer to be closer to the wildlife refuge, then you might want to consider Rockport or its environs.
