engineers in houston are super friendly but hidden rage indian/pakistani/korean/or chinese guys, redneck country boys, or typical dudes that you couldnt simply apply a label to. what is nerdy or hipster in that context? does raji have an iphone? yes, but he also goes out to bars 4 nights a week and plays fantasy football. bill likes to go hunting but thank god never talks about it. he wears khaki pants on most days and a generic polo and levis on friday. he doesnt know what a hipster or a nerd is. that, in total, are the engineers that are in houston. hey he may have played 500+ hrs of dark souls, but you'd never know it

That sums up most of the young corporate working class in Houston to a tee.

Interesting thread how the culture seems to evolve. I guess I am an anti hipster, but not enough to be a cool nerd - I'm on a verge of being old school nerd engineer and apathetic old guy - married with children, don't care about technology except my TV, recycle when I feel like it (most of the time don't), laugh at hipsters, drink beer on my patio and barbeque on weekends, drive a gas guzzling truck and loud fast motorcycle, don't hang out in bars all the time, only once a week, but bring my kids and wife with me, not religious, used to be conservative, but now more liberal. What am I????

I have a similar life style, minus the bike, kids, truck and being passive of technology. I work in technology, so I really have no choice. When I was in my 20's, I was liberal, then I went hard conservative in my early 30's, and now in my late 30's, I'm strictly a fiscally conservative person (moderate conservative). Seems that we all change our beliefs once we grow up, make money and see the world in our own eyes for what it is.

I'm neither poor nor rich. I define poor as living check to check, in dept, no retirement and having no assets. I define rich as any household making over 300k, has assets and a very healthy portfolio. At age 37, I now find it much easier to respect both sides of politics, learn from both and align myself with the beliefs that personally impact me. It's so easy to get caught up in the political war at a young age, because you immediately think that everything is black and white. That sort of belief couldn't be further from the truth. Most people make the mistake that they must fall in either a democratic or conservative party. Our world is too complex to simply fit everything into two parties. After understanding what this meant about 4 years ago, it completely broadened my perspective of our political system and who I am as a person.

The most unfortunate thing about all that I have just said is that most people come to this sort of realization until they are much older and wiser.
