FYI, people should know what their local officials think about this issue.

Texas, Houston leaders differ on gun control proposals - Houston Chronicle

Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland and Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said they support the proposed assault weapons ban.
“We arrest very few deer hunters in this city … the people we arrest with assault rifles are predominantly gang members, drug dealers that have gotten these guns because of various loopholes,” McClelland said. “And they didn’t steal these guns; they paid for them.”
McClelland supports the position of the Major Cities Chief Police Association, whose members advocate a return to the Clinton-era assault rifle ban, limited-capacity magazines and expanded background checks for gun buyers.
Garcia said he would like to see a “reasonable and practical solution” to the proliferation of assault weapons that would not impede a citizen’s right to own a gun.
“As for military-style assault weapons, armor-piercing bullets and similar items, I don’t want that type of weaponry on the streets of Harris County,” Garcia said. “We are seeing where cartels got firearms through a legal process.”

Question: Are the Chief and the Sheriff elected or appointed?

Appointed, elected.
Sheriff was on the November 6, 2012 general election ballot.

SHOCKING - Liberals supporting Liberals and ignoring the constitution when its inconvenient for them! I am truly shocked!

If Parker tried to enact a citywide ban - she would get voted out so fast it would be laughable...we have plenty of liberals in Houston, but most of them even have guns.

another quote from the chief

Gun control proposals divide local and state leaders | khou.com Houston

Asked Thursday about his opinion, Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland said that as a gun owner and advocate for the 2nd Amendment, he is also an avid hunter and sportsman. But he says he prefers a bolt action single-shot rifle, not a semi-automatic weapon.
"And I certainly see no reason why the public should have military style assault weapons,” said McClelland. “I think it's a danger to the general public and it's a danger to my police officers.”

Tell me again how banning them will keep them from the gangbangers?

Cause last time I checked they don't care what the law is.
