So they created this huge mall that was not just for shopping but had an amusement park inside and all sorts of other things since people there don't like to be out in the cold. That concept works in MN, probably would not work well in LA.
What I don't like about Mall of America is that it's just way too big. Too big to serve any reasonable purpose. When I visited there as a teenager, I recall seeing 3 Gaps, 3 Footlockers, and plenty of 'doubles' as well. It was just plain wasteful. Loved the Peanuts themed park in there though...was pretty cool.

An interesting look into the past. This was shot in front of Macy's (previously Foley's).

The only flaw in your theory is that in Minnesota, people LOVE to be in the cold.

“After further investigation by the building’s owner, no financially feasible scenario was found for maintaining a smaller store in the old structure,” said Bob Eury, Executive Director for the Houston Downtown Management District. “A new location is our only option, and quite frankly, a new, smaller store will bode better for downtown in the long run.”

How conven that they would close shop two weeks after books a million closes, and macys biggest grape was the space they had was to big

What year was that? Was that right before he went to Dallas?

Horton Plaza (in HD) - YouTube

Here's a HD video of Horton Plaza. Yes, it's a mall. The point is, it has a San Diego flavor to it.

This can't be good for downtown. Books-A Million and now, the only major department store.

Another thing that i think hinders downtown Houston is that ridiculous sign ordinance. There's so many restaurants and things that I've missed simply because of the poor signage. It makes downtown feel dull and uninteresting. If the city relaxed the sign ordinance a little bit, I'm sure that would help liven things up a little.

Horton Plaza seems pretty tired. It's the same old outdoor mall you see everywhere in sleepy communities, 40 miles from anything interesting (and sadly sometimes cities lost as to how to use the space), grappling to create interest. Try SF's Union Square. We need something like that, with a Houston spin.
