Within 3 years, 7 couples that I knew from Los Angeles moved out to the Katy area (avg. age 35). Two of them were able to buy a home for the first time! It was an adjustment, but we love it here. The biggest adjustment for me was the scenery. I kept saying, "Man it's flat out here!". But I'd gladly gave up the scenery and weather for cheaper housing and a better quality of life for me and my family.

I have been ready to leave California for awhile - wish I had run a couple of years ago, but my home in the SF East Bay is now in escrow so Cali will soon be in my rear view mirror. I'll miss the scenery and the climate and that's about it. I am buying a business in Katy, and that deal should close in 6 weeks or so and I'm looking forward to starting the second half of life in the Houston area.

My first visit was last March to visit a good friend, and as soon as I got off the plane I noticed a difference. It took me awhile to figure out the simple fact that people were actually friendly!! (a shock after flying from Oakland)

My friend showed me around Houston and then we hit the road to San Antonio and Austin. I was intrigued enough to do some research, liked what I saw and flew back in August to scout out possible business opportunities. I survived the humidity (i like heat, but have never lived where it's humid) and after some more research and discussion found the right business in Katy.

The next trip was in November to work out a deal, and the wheels have been spinning since. I was concerned about selling my home, but am lucky to be in a good area and have been in my home for 12 years so I still had a decent chunk of equity. I did not expect that I would get 9 offers in 5 days when I put it on the market!! Even though the top offer bailed within 48 hours of acceptance, the #2 offer was $31,000 over my asking price and took a bit of the sting off of the huge equity loss the previous 2 years.

If Californians are not flocking anywhere and everywhere, they are crazy. The ship is sinking, it's time to get out. Cali is broke (and broken) and it's just going to get worse. The politics suck, the population is growing and the resources are being stretched thin.

I'm excited to be "flocking" to Houston and I won't be looking back. Maybe I can even get used to National League baseball. Guess I better since I am buying a sports bar!!! (the good news is that I hate the Giants, so that's a start) One thing I know, it will be fun buying a new home that's twice the size and half the price!!

Could be; the traffic seems worse now...

This thread been around a while. I'm still not seeing any plates or hearing of anyone from Cali buying in my part of town.

Of course, you can't get a MCcastle here for 300k either.
