Ok, let's start calling the Dallas Cowboys, the Arlington Cowboys.

Well in this case, Houston has a while before it reaches third.

No they wouldn't. I am from Chicago and I can tell you that at no point in my life have I heard anyone in Chicago care about being #3, #2, #1, #4, etc in size. It is meaningless number. Who cares how big you are? All that matters is the quality of the city.

I'll tell you when Houston will really have arrived: when Houstonians stop caring about being on some list. Houstonians have a massive inferiority complex because of how the rest of the country perceives Houston. Therefore, we feel the need to show rankings and say, "look, we really are good". Stop it, lists don't matter one bit.

I say the same thing to my friends in South Korea. South Korea is a country that was third world just 20-30 years ago. Now, it is as modern and powerful an economy as any other. Koreans feel under recognized, however, so every time they get some honor (like hosting the G20 conference last year) they go way overboard. I've told my friends that Korea will really have arrived on the international stage the day that they host the G20 and their reaction is, "don't want it, it will screw up traffic, who cares about all these wankers coming to town, etc." rather than throwing a year long party.

Not when there is bad news about the city on the national news, Houston is specifically mentioned. When there is good news, it's in "Texas" when the video/photo has a Houston street sign as a clue.

The media would never make that mistake with Chicago and Illinois!

You're confusing an inferiority complex with righteous indignation.

We could change the name of the thread to "Houston, the city that cares what everyone thinks about them."

There is a very blurry line between the two concepts, however I believe that most of it falls on the inferiority complex end of things.

There you go, your problem is you care when you should simply ignore it. When I traveled through the backwoods of Europe in the 1980s and people thought I came from a city that was infested with Al Capone look alikes, I laughed. I never cared that they were all wrong, I never bothered to try and correct them because I knew the truth and I didn't feel the need to correct them.

On the other hand, I went to graduate school at a University that was generally viewed as a second tier University (certainly wouldn't show up in a general top 25). However, the specific program I entered was ranked #1 in the country. For a long time I had a clear inferiority complex about that as when someone asked me where I went to school, I felt the need to follow up the name of the university with "but the program I was in was ranked....". Now, I don't care anymore. I've reached the point in my career where it is irrelevant what people think of my school.

Um, I said that a bigger city isn't better because of what you mentioned. But honestly no one would know or care about Houston if it wasn't #4 or 5. Having that number actually means that people mention Houston in the same sentence as LA and Chicago. Whereas if it was #11, no one would mention it. That's not to say that Houston is a bad city, but it wouldn't have much clout if it was much lower on the population list.
