But, just like the SAT scores that everybody is googling, the enrollment numbers vary from source to source. Here is one example that indicates that the entire senior class is less than 50 kids..... If this school is something to strive for, why are there so many more freshman than seniors? Why wouldn't the classes all be of similar size? Is there a thinning of the herd that takes place in order to keep these statistics as polished up looking as possible? Does anybody know?

Eastwood Academy Enrollment:
Total Enrollment - 257
Rank Nationally - 12310 out of 19379
Rank in Texas - 851 out of 1487

Eastwood Academy Students by Grade:
9th - 75
10th - 71
11th - 62
12th - 49

Eastwood Academy Students by Gender:
Male - 108 (42%)
Female - 149 (58%)
There are over 400 students right now. 9th grade is the only grade level with openings. The other levels have waiting lists. I have no idea where those numbers come from or from what year they come from, but currently the school is full except 9th grade. They strive to have about 100 students per grade level. The limit of students is only bound by the size of the school. They are planning a huge addition to the school and I imagine they will open their enrollment to larger numbers once the addition is complete. Remember, EA has only been around since 2001. If you look at the stats on EA you will see they only get better each year.

Lizzy, you're not missing anything.
I know right. It's reeeaaalllyy time for this thread to slip off the first page and at the top.

It was amusing for like a day or so. But now at almost a week later it's just annoying.

They have a magnet program for those wanting to become educators and my middle son is very much leaning in that direction so that might be a better option for him than Eastwood Academy. Austin also has an amazing band program and I can't remember for sure, but I thought I was told they are the best in the state. Again, my middle son is very involved in band, so that also may make Austin more appealing for him.

Here are Eastwood Academy's stats.

I am going to leave out the stats on race and economic status because I don't see how that applies to whether or not a school is good.

Attendance rate: 98.2%
Graduation rate: 100%
College enrollment: 100%
SAT scores: 1315

However, on second thought... according to lots of people posting about schools on city-data... going to a school with less economically disadvantaged kids means the schools are better. So, maybe the fact that Eastwood Academy can take these poor kids from "fatherless" homes and get them to perform at this level makes it that much more apparent how much better this school is. To use your own logic, that is.

I want to apologize for the harsh welcome given by some of the postings. Generally speaking, members recognize this is a forum to exchange information and perceptions, rather than put people down. As the rule goes, city people just like the city better, so they look for the optimum location. Whereas suburbanites just like the burbs, and there's nothing wrong with that... a lot of my childhood was in the burbs. As an adult with school age children, i prefer the city.

Modster - I checked out the crime map for the 610 loop. you are right on. if i based my living location upon the crime, Eastwood is my preferred location, as opposed to Montrose, or even the Heights.

Dusty's Dad - I sure appreciated knowing your experience with the area. It makes me feel better. My 5 years in Eastwood have been nothing but positive. Thank you for the post, and I'm sure other prospective home buyers are too.

TxHustla - I'm truly sorry for your bad memories. For what it's worth, I moved my family from the Woodlands due to a bad experience with the drug crowd. Drug problems are everywhere, however the wealthier Jones families tend to raise a more sophisticated drug addict, and the drug distribution is a little more sly. I would not advise anyone to move to the burbs to avoid crime, nor would I advise them to avoid the burbs. You need to decide what your lifestyle is and then make a nice pick. I think that is what Vegankris is doing.

Tstone / Illuminatex / RCH99 - If you speak to any competent psychologist trying to locate a good school, they'll point you to test scores. Since all of the kids are being tested, there is no place to hide. Good test scores indicate the children are comfortable and unstressed. Eastwood Academy and Carnegie Vanguard high schools are tops in the nation, both a part of the HISD.

TxHustla / Tstone - For anyone reading through this string, it's disappointing that you bring up "That area is 80-90% hispanic/mexican...and its rare they report or say anything to the police..." I could make the same argument about the bubbles of caucasians along the perimeter of HISD. I might figure only 10% of whites report drug usage, domestic violence and assault, simply to avoid compromising a reputation among the Jones families. It might only be on par with the percentage of caucasian men washing their hands after using a toilet. Let's just stick to data.

Illuminatex / RCH99 - When kids take their ACT and SAT exams, GPA's between 3.0 and 3.9 tend to look hazy. Unless you're a 4.0 student, the test scores are another hard data point used by colleges to enable them to evaluate students across the nation from all walks of life... bad HS's and good HS's. Education is what a person makes of it, regardless of the school, but the greatest edge to a child is challenging them with a good curriculum and good teachers wanting them to succeed. I have seen too often parents think they can drop their kids into a wealthy competitive school system and a success story will emerge. Rarely does a parent know what they mean by asking their kid to succeed in a competitive HS. The better hope is to ask their kid to be comfortable in the environment and be reachable by the educators and parents.

Ironically this is a tale of two cities, Eastwood of the past and present. Anyone desiring to live in the city, should look at Eastwood. Everyone looking for a top notch school system should consider Eastwood. Eastwood is Awesome!!! I love walking to the games!
Look I have no dog in this fight. I don't care were the OP wants to live, but lets be honest about the schools, both Eastwood Acadamy and Carnegie Vangurad are Charter/magnet schools they can pick and choose their students. Unlike a regular public school that has to take everybody. So these stats that you'll are throwing out are kind of skewed.

Even after 2005 many schools continued using 1600 because they believed the writing test was too new. I'm not sure when the schools began accepting the writing score.

Those scores may be outdated, but I'm not sure if they were pre-2005

@vicman, I believe you have to be enrolled in the beginning of the senior year to be eligible for the top 10%

Eastwood should be proud. I enjoy walking from Dumble to Eastwood, from Harrisburg to Leeland. The homes are varied and the trees are even more so. I appreciate the improvements being made to the sidewalks, but I know we're working on it. I can't wait for the light rail to get finished. Bohemeo's is my favorite coffee shop and couldn't be happier to have Kanomwan nearby (i love Thai). I've been walking in the early mornings and evenings most days. I only catch the mid-day scene on the weekends. I'm not seeing anything rough, except some yards and paint jobs. My neighbors, near and distant, have all been really friendly, save one. He's just not an extrovert. Where are the drugs? I could use a joint. It's too costly to drive outside the loop to visit my co-workers, so I'm left with only local beer and i don't like hangovers. Help anyone?

That's not Eastwood, that must be the Montrose area! *Kidding*

I always love to see the oak trees. I do pick neighborhoods off of how nice their tree coverage is. Just reminds me of a proper neighborhood, in my opinion. If there was some kind of program to plant oak trees around Houston, I would volunteer for it. Oak, Pine, and any other big bark tree, would be good for me. No more palms, please.

I'm loving the truth you are bringing to this thread. I don't know what people are smoking because that area is still rogue'ish.
