An important fact to keep in mind in areas where Radon levels are higher, these sump pump holes can be huge sources of Radon in your basement, which is a cancer risk. Extra care should be taken to seal these sump pump holes and if Radon is still higher than recommended, your sump pump hole can also be used for the input to a Radon mitigation system, to keep your Radon levels in an acceptable range. This is one reason why the manufactured round sump pump wells can be purchased with sealed covers.
Our sump pump was set into a hole in the concrete floor in the basement. There was a bit of a 'bench' built over it, 2x4s and plywood, a dehumidifier sat on it and drained directly down into the sump pump. The whole set up was then covered by a small closet with a folding louvered door.
Protected from cat, efficiently drained dehumidifier. Worked well.
In your case I think I would hit some thrift stores, find a small cabinet/end table with louvered doors, cut the bottom out of it, and set it over the sump pump hole.
