We have a few plate glass windows in our living room that are approx. 30"x 24" each that would be an easy entry point for burglars. So I'm thinking about getting either 3/16" or 3/8" thick plexiglass/Acrylic panels and putting them in a few of these windows behind the existing glass. Is this a good idea or am I overlooking something? I'm not concerned about creating another Fort Knox lol but simply deter petty crooks. Thanks

Most burglars look for the easiest point of entry. Putting lexan over some of your windows will protect THOSE windows, but what about the other windows and doors?

A sledge hammer to a door is pretty effective way to get into a house. Noisy and messy yes, but if someone wants to get in bad enough, they will find a way.

Plant rose bushes in front of your windows. The thorns might prove too much for a would be burglar.

Well those few windows I'm thinking about doing are by far the easiest point to get in. The rest of the house is actually sealed up fairly tight and what's not I'll be getting around to..

How would you attach it? And Plexi scratches WAY easily -- it wouldn't be too many cleanings before you'd really see a difference.

The stuff yellows in the sun too. Not a good thing to cover a window with.

If these are fixed windows- why would you think an intruder would look at those windows as an entry point? Operable windows and doors are much easier entry points- but I digress, it's obvious. Or is it?

If it really concerns you- look for replacement sashes that are impact resistant. Those that meet Miami/Dade County Standards.

The good stuff does not yellow and it is coated with a hard substance to resist scratching. However it costs a lot and it is hard to cut without splintering it.

Bouganvilla works even better. No one is getting through a Bouganvilla the thorns will go right through shoes, soles of shoes, even some types of metal. The thorns have something on them that makes the scratch or poke hurt like the dickens too. Nasty things.

I think it depends a lot on UV exposure. In Texas the higher quality stuff degraded in a different way - it developed micro cracks in the surface.

Degrading or not you're right... it's not something I'd want to try and replace or cover a picture window with.
