Has anyone in the Greenville area seen any builders using anything better than Jeld-Wen windows? I'm not in the $700K+ market, but seems you have to spend this much to get a better than average window, meaning Andersen or Pella. Can't I get a new home in the $300 - $500K range and get Andersen windows included? I don't want to spend the time, etc. to go custom or semi-custom...just want to find a builder that is willing to use above average quality materials...and if they are willing to do this, then it's a good indicator they are scimping on other things as well.

Thanks.

EEEEEK!

Are you implying that Jeld-Wen doesn't make a premium product? Dick Wendt (the company's founder) will take you off the Christmas card list.

Seriously, though, builders that use premium grade material as standard are going to charge premium prices.

Talk to a couple of builders and see what an upgrade to your window of choice would cost.

Be thankful that you're getting Jeldwen windows- here in Atlanta, even the $700k tract homes get Silverline vinyl windows. Now, Silverline is owned by Andersen, but that doesn't make it an Andersen window by any stretch. Rather than focusing on brand names, though, I'd look more at the "U" values (the lower the better) and the inclusion of a low-E coating- those two factors are the real keys to a window's performance.

I just bought a new home with Silverline (Silver Line) windows. I don't know anything about this company or brand. Do they had a bad reputation? Anyone here interested in sharing their experience with these windows?

Yes the "U" value is important, but also the framing...it is generally known in the industry that Jeld Wen is a mid tier window commonly chosen by builders as it hits a price point they are comfortable with and consumers dont really know or see a difference...at least not the first year they are in the house. Andersen or Pella are by far better choices...it is just dissappointed, but guess not surprizing, that builders dont make these their window of choice. I'm not saying they are junky, but you will see a difference over time.

I think you're just a "brand hog".
Andersen and Pella are pretty much crap compared to Kolbe&Kolbe- some would say... so what's in a brand name? $$$$$
You're paying for a name- let's face it, there just so much you can do to build a window.

And your take on builders...
It's not scrimping, it's hitting a competitive price point where we can make a profit. If a buyer came to me and wanted to up-grade the windows, my answer is a firm, "we can do that". Here's the up-graded price (plus some more for me), you'll need to pay me upfront, and it's non-refundable. And oh, by the way, you'll never get back that few extra thousand you spent on the windows when it comes time for resale.
Windows are like wheels on a car- every buyer expects them to be there.

K'ledge is right on the money. It IS about hitting a price point. For those who aren't building a $500k custom house (or even a $300k custom house), window brand isn't going to be a big selling point. A lot of buyers don't think about what brand the windows are. They might consider if the windows are dual pane and lo-e, but the brand isn't a big factor when your talking about homes that are not custom built. Like tires, windows are expected to be there. It's like someone worrying about what brand of paint was used or what brand of house wrap. It's one of those things that is taken for granted by most buyers and also something that you might not get your money out of. If I'm looking at two identical houses, one having top brand windows and the other just average windows, and there is an $8k - $10k difference in the price, I'm going for the average windows. The price difference just doesn't pay off for the average home buyer looking at buying a home in the $150k to $350k range. I'd rather see that extra $8k spent on something that really GRABS a buyer - like appliances or granite or fixtures. Those are things that buyers pay attention to.

you guys are reading WAAAAY too much into the question...it's simple, read it slowly..."any builders in greenville using Andersen or Pella?" ...try shredding someone else...only try reading their question first.

No,I got your question.
I'm just informing you of the choice you're making. Any builder- Left coast, Right coast, Northern border, southern border, all make the same kind of decisions. Especially those that like to stay in business.

Is that Greenville- IL or SC?
