I think painting the dining room a dark color will close it in and make it feel and look really small.

My personal preference for dining rooms is a pale blue or pale blue/gray. Not that baby blue or powder blue, but a rich pale blue or blue/gray. Pair that with dark brown hardwood floors and dark brown dining room furniture and you have the perfect dining room (to me, anyway!).

i am not sure about painting the cabinets. they look like wooden cabinets and paint will hide all the wooden gain and they will look like laminated ones. you might want to sand them and stain them with different color. i would stain them with darker color and go with neutral paint color like beige and paint the dining room with 2 shades darker than the kitchen.

you can go to local home improvement store and get the color cards to see which color will look the best and match with other decor.

Donna, I meant to mention that my sister and I painted her kitchen cupboards red and it turned out really cute.
