My wife wants a white kitchen and wants me to paint over our maple cabinets. Are there more than just getting white paint and start painting. Do I paint the inside doors of the cabinets as well. Is this something anyone can do or should I leave this to a pro.
Fallingwater painted her cabinets white. They're gorgeous. I'm sure she'll share the how-to when she sees your thread. There's definitely more to it than just buying white paint. You need to sand the wood, take off the dust appropriately, primer, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, clear coat sand, clear coat, sand, clear coat. You can do it yourself or hire someone else. It depends on how committed you are to doing it. It takes a long time to do it right. This isn't a weekend project.
If you don't feel adequate to doing this, don't. Get a quote. If you can afford to have it done right, then go ahead. Otherwise, suggest to your wife that she research the task by visiting a paint store and finding out how to do it herself.
I painted awful looking oak. Took me months to do properly. I used specialty paints In-SilX primer and In-SilX cabinet coat. The ONLY reason I painted them was because they are solid oak.
I first stripped the cabinets in situ. Then, one by one, they were all hand sanded. And then it was prime, sand, prime, sand, prime, sand - paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, clear coat.
Yes, you paint the insides.........and underneath the wall cabinets. I also replaced the toe kick trim.
Yes you can paint maple. Some people hate painted cabinets, some people like them. It's your choice. It can be done very nicely. Try Alkyd paint: Product Catalog
My husband is in the process of doing ours. It is taking a loooong time, but we want them done right. Just getting them ready to paint is a lot of work. You have to completely clean them with TSP and then sand them, in order to get rid of all the oil that floats around a kitchen. If you sand first it will embed some of the oil and the paint won't stick the way it should. You also want to get paint designed to paint cabinets.
