I would have to see your floor plan to give you a good answer. How much will you use your front door? We use our garage entry door most often and we have hardwood in our entryway. It's been there for 16 years and still looks fine, but, that door gets used about 1/10th of the time compared to our garage door. We have a rug by the door and we live in an area were everyone takes their shoes off at the door most of the year.

Wait!!!! Think hard! So much traffic! I've had hard wood. I love hardwood. Except in Kitchens and Foyer entryways.

What about slate? Or all of that wonderful Mexican tile that is popular in TX?

I will never use hardwood in an entry way again. Or a kitchen. NEVER!

The important point to having durable hardwood floors is the finish. My house is 14 years old, with hardwood floors throughout the first floor ( except for the kitchen) and they look perfect. My next door neighbor's house is one year older than mine and her floors are shot and need refinishing. The only difference is that mine had a double coat of polyurethane and her's did not.
