Hi,
I am considering a position in Gaffney South Carolina. Are there any gay friendly churches in the area? Also what are some things to do if you are a single transplant to the area. Thanks.
Interesting title thread. I don't know of any CD posters that live in Gaffney/Blacksburg.
A Google search revealed this site (http://www.gaychurch.org/Find_a_Church/united_states/us_south_carolina.htm - broken link) with gay friendly churches in SC.
I worked in Gaffney for about a year in 2008-09. I urge you to visit the Gaffney area before you commit to buying or renting anything there. Gaffney is a small town, very conservative, and has been hit hard by the Great Recession.
My recommendation: live in Spartanburg and commute to Gaffney. You may also want to check out the Kings Mountain/Gastonia, NC areas.
If you choose to live in Spartanburg, you're somewhat close to Greenville which is arguably the most progressive city in the Upstate. Of course, Gastonia is close to Charlotte.
I know you asked about the Gaffney area, and I have been researching the Greenville Spartanburg area but maybe I have some info for you. In doing my research I found it very difficult to find info on the LGBT community in upstate SC. All I was looking for as you are is the churches, and I was also looking for social clubs or places people meet or activities. Bowling groups or whatever. Dispite hearing the areas have a LGBT population it must be somewhat difficult to find especially for a complete newcomer. Thats not a knock on the area but its a truthful observation. It is very difficult when you are not from an area and trying to find your place. So I can understand your needing to do some research.
I really have only found the Universalist Unitarian Church in Spartanburg SC which is not far from Gaffney some 20 miles or so I guess. This church seems to be friendly to the gay pride celebrations so Im sure they must have some LGBT folks iin their congregation. There is also a Unitarian Church in Greenville, but perhaps that is a distance from Gaffney Im not sure. I really don't know what the congregations would be like, or what presense the gay community has in the upstate region. I honestly did not find out much more about the area concerning gay churches. I know the actual Gay churches in US cities are the MCC congregations but I see none in the upstate SC region.
I hope this helps you somewhat. It is a beautiful area but again it can be difficult to find information, and find your place when your brand new in a new location.
Thank you for both of your replies. After talking with the employer, I've decided it wouldn't be the best position for me.
