As far as directions: From Altamont Rd, you probably want to head down Piney Mountain Rd (Altamont changes names to Piney Mountain when you cross State Park Rd coming down the mountain) to where it ends at N. Pleasantburg Dr.
From there, you can turn left and go a short distance to Rutherford Rd, where you'll turn right at the Bi Lo shopping center. Take Rutherford for almost a mile, then you can turn left onto N. Main St. which goes thru some of Greenville's most beautiful neighborhoods straight into downtown.
Or you can turn right and take N. Pleasantburg around to Poinsett Hwy in front of Cherrydale Point shopping center. Turn left onto Poinsett Hwy which becomes Rutherford St. to where it hits Buncombe St. Turn left on Buncombe, and that takes you right into downtown as well. From Cherrydale Point, it's about 2 miles into downtown.
Thanks, would this be a nice place to view the fireworks? I see the state park closes at 9. Is there a place to park along the road that overlooks downtown? Does the traffic get bad there on the 4th?
Paris Mountain State Park is not on Altamont Road; aptly, it is on State Park Road. The roads do not connect. You will not see downtown from any vantage point in the park.
Further, Altamont Road is NOT a place from which to watch fireworks. It is a mountain, residential 2 lane road with no shoulder. This is NOT a scenic road accommodating casual parking.
Paris Mountain is not your 4th of July destination.
I've always thought what a travesty it is that Greenville doesn't have at least one public spot with a view of the city and/or Blue Ridge Mountains on Paris Mountain - like the Star in Roanoke, or even the Vulcan Statue in Birmingham.
I know property owners on the mountain wouldn't necessarily want that, but it certainly would be a great addition to attractions in/near the city! Maybe even have a funicular or aerial tram up to a particular spot atop the mountain with no public access to the mountain per se, just a fantastic view and maybe a small cafe, gift shop, etc. Keeps everybody happy!

You want to be downtown for the fireworks, right under them. The best place to see them.

Thanks. I'm trying to find the closest spot to Haywood Rd and W Orchard Park Dr to watch them that would have the least traffic when leaving. We have to leave early Tuesday AM and I don't want to get stuck in traffic for hours afterwards.
Any suggestions?

The best place to watch the fireworks is definitely downtown Greenville, because last year the fireworks were synced to music. But I was also at least an hour and a half in exiting the parking lot afterwards. Normally it isn't like that for downtown Greenville events except for something like this when the entire crowd exits at one time.
Thinking outside the box, at the top of the hill where W Orchard Park Drive meets Pelham Road, there used to be a nice restaurant just off Pelham Road with a great view of the city of Greenville. One could sit in the parking lot just below the restaurant and see the view, but with some caveats.
Is the site vacant? If so, it wouldn't be a good idea to hang out there to watch.
