I personally like the English.
There is anti-English sentiment due to BP, but no one really goes around wishing death to the English.
I like the English more than I like the president ...
I always felt it was the opposite, that most English don't really like Americans because we're known for being haughty, fat, lazy, and bossy.
A British person told me that British journalists are anti-American, but the British people aren't on the whole.
Pew recently came out with a new global survey and it says 73% of the British have a favorable view of Americans. (Meaning US Americans) The lowest our favorable percentage in Britain, as a people, got was 69% according to them. The US as a nation has at times had lower favorability in Britain, but currently the US as a nation is listed at 65% favorable in Britain.
Why British journalists dislike America, or assume we dislike them, I don't know. I think part of it might be a concern that we have too much influence in the world and for those on the Left we represent things they dislike. (Religiousness, unrestrained Capitalism, etc)
There was an article in a British newspaper recently that said Americans deep down really hate the English. It say that President Obama has always been anti English and this is now showing in the way he always says British Petroleum rather than BP which it now is. It says Hollywood always casts the baddies with English accents, and gives a few examples of films which show the English in the same light as the Nazis ie Braveheart and The Patriot.
It then went on to say that an Englishman on holiday overheard a group of Americans who thought no one else was around slagging off the English in general. It says English and not British as the Irish and Scots seem to be liked. It ends saying that the so called special relationship is only in the minds of British politicians and that we should stop supporting America politically.
I hope that this view is wrong as I love America even though I have not been there yet, I am hoping to visit with my family next year. So do you Americans really dislike us or is this article complete rubbish.

I couldn't read the article , but the sentiment is "rubbish." Americans like the English, Scottish, and Irish. I'd say that most educated Americans share the sentiment of the "special relationship" between the US and the UK.
Europeans in general, mainly the French but also the British, are very critical of Americans and American policy. If I took your media seriously, I'd think that western Europeans hated America.
The BP issue is tricky. On one hand, BP is a global company with large US ownership and assets. On the other hand, BP is a British company, with a British CEO, who seems like he is trying to **** America off with his dismissive comments and inadequate response. Americans, particularly gulf coast Americans, are irate right now. Most of that anger is directed at BP. Some of that anger spills over toward the oil industry, the US Government, the Obama administration, the Bush administration, and to a small degree the British.
So yes, US-Brit relations are strained at the moment, but understand that American rage is going in all directions right now... including back towards ourselves, for being so stupid that we all allowed this to happen, with the negligent people we elect, and the gasoline that we demand.
Saying the Americans hate the British would be like saying the Argentines hate the Italians. Would you hate yourself?
