As I suspected, or close to my expectations, inside the Washington DC Beltway is a hair under 2 million people in 255 sq mi:

DC Beltway population
1,971,766

Land area 255.7 sq mi/ 7,711 ppsm.

District of Columbia: 689,545
Total inner beltway MD: 634,307
Total inner beltway VA: 647,914

If this were one city boundary it would be the 5th largest city after Houston, and more dense than Baltimore, Oakland, and Minneapolis.

What's up with the Census website with regard to Louisville and Louisville/Jefferson Balance?
It looks split up again with Louisville coming in at 246,161 and the "balance" coming in at 386,884.
Can someone explain what's going on vis-a-vis the 2010 and 2019 numbers?

I'm always pleased to see our capital increase in prominence. Watch out London. Here we come

Now, how long will it take for gdp per capita statistics to be updated? Im sure we can do them ourselves… but the official ones?

Also will 2022 census estimated be the first estimate year with using the 2020 census data?

Interesting. How do you calculate this considering some cities cross the Beltway though (Springfield, North Springfield, McLean, Tysons, Greenbelt, Camp Springs)? And did you add up all those tiny PG County towns too? :O

I also wish the Beltway was a bit more spherical. It's always weird to think that National Harbor or Huntington or Rose Hill are outside the Beltway. To me, as an Alexandrian, I consider them very much a part of the DC urban tapestry, and definitely more than someplace like McLean or Cabin John. But the Beltway is quite squat in the South, so not a true urban radius.

Providence, Central Falls, Pawtucket Combined have 289,000 people in 28 sq miles for a density of 10,300 ppsm. In 33 sq miles (+N. Providence) the population is 323,000 in 33 sq miles. Which is larger than Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, And St Louis. Add in East Providence and Cranston and at 75 sq miles it’s 453,000. Which is larger than Cleveland in a slightly smaller area.

It’s a very dense urban core.

I played it as fair as possible with the Census Tracts for example Tract 4203 technically crosses “inside” of the Beltway slightly around the Fairfax/ Alexandria line. But where the actual residences really sit are on the “outside” just across the freeway in Rose Hill area etc. There are a few more examples, but for the most part every Census tract going around the edges of the Beltway cuts off right as you cross the freeway to another side. In some cases the “outer” Beltway side being more dense like National Harbor/Oxon Hill. There’s also that little triangle inside the I-270 spur with about 13k people that I did not add because it technically abuts the outer edge of 495. So moving the needle just a hair one direction or the other would easily push the number above 2 million.

Yes I went around the entire circumference to tally up each tract, so my math is as close to correct as possible, but might be off a few thousand either way, Northern PG County around the MoCo/ Takoma Park line was a doozy!
