Does anyone know a way to treat older maple trees that have black/white fungus on the bark and show signs of stress/leaf curl?
Is it safe to plant other maples in the immediate area to begin replacing the dying ones or are they doomed to get the fungus?
Long and short of it is that I have a driveway lined with sugar maples ranging in age from 30-70 yrs. of age. There are a number of trees that have what appears to be this fungus, are losing their bark/branches, and obviously dying off. It may be too late for some of them but I'd like to save the remaining and replant sugar maples to fill in the gaps in the existing tree line.
This is in a very rural area and I cannot even find a "tree surgeon" who is willing to make the drive. The local county forester was not able to offer any advice (very disappointing).
These trees are much too large to spray so I am wondering if there is a powder or a deep root feeder treatment that might be helpful? I'd take photos but I don't know how to upload any to the net or this forum.
