Is there a way to identify what type of maple tree you have when it is very young? There are some maples growing in my garden and I will transplant them as long as they are not Silver Maples. Thanks.

It looks like a Red Maple. They grow around here, and reseed readily.

I second the previous reply, although its easy to make a mistake when the trees are that size. Are red maples common in your area? If so, the chances are good thats what you have. Its also possible that its a sugar maple, a tree thats even nicer in my opinion. There are other maples that are scrubbier and don't have nearly as much to offer as reds or sugars. If those seem to be common in your area, the picture may be one of those. Worse thing that could happen is you realize in a couple years its not a nice tree, just pull it out and replace it!

Red maple. The leaves of a silver maple and red maple actually look quite different when you have them next to each other, but sometimes it is hard to tell if you are not use to looking at maple leaves.

Red maple is Acer rubrum, also known as soft maple and swamp maple. The ones with red leaves are Norway maples, unless you mean the Red leafed Japanese maples. Red maples turn red, orange or yellow in the fall.
