While Italian history does somewhat promote thin crust, it is thick crust that dominates Italy.
When I was in Italy, I ordered pizza at practically every meal and it was always thin crust. We ate at some non-tourist spots too so it wasn't that they were catering to tourists or anything.

Thin is my favorite. Domino's Philly Cheesesteak or Papa Murphy's Mediterranean.

I made pizza from scratch for over 25 years but I quit. DH wants the crust thinner and thinner and thinner, while DS and I get tired of thin crust all the time.
I got tired of making two pizza doughs.
We like pepperoni, green pepper, & mushrooms mostly. A little bacon added in is nice now and then, or good Italian sausage. DH likes olives, I don't.
I almost always prefer thin, crispy crust. But once in a great while, it's all about a drive to Chicago for the famous deep dish pizza at Geno's on Superior Street. OMG, it's heaven on earth!

Yes I think PA2UK is mistaken. Traditional Pizza in Italy is very thin crust. Thick Crust Pizza is an American invention.
