A person can walk in flip flops without making a lot of noise. I wear them for just about every kind of event---why?? I "have" to. I have had several surgeries on my feet--Dr. messed up and I almost lost my right foot. I don't have a choice now. My feet are so tender from all the scars that I am left with flip flops for my basic footwear, if I'm lucky I can find tennis shoes for winter or Uggs. I will just have to chance offending someone I suppose by wearing them but I would rather do that then to suffer with the pain from trying to make someone else happy. Plus, as I already said, it is unnecessary to make the clicking noise when you walk in flip flops if you learn how to walk in them. There is no reason heels need to click either--a person needs to learn how to walk in them properly. I've had to learn with the flip flops!!
cynwldkat has it correct - as long as a person learns to walk, shoes are fine, but there are people in this world who shuffle their feet or do the slapping noise on purpose because they think it's going to attract attention.
As for people who try to down heels, you're missing a key point. Heels make no noise on carpeted floors which most businesses use in every room except breakrooms, warehouses and server rooms - places females do not frequent. Flip flops will slap no matter what the floor is like beneath them because they're contacting the bottom of your foot, not the floor. So no, you rarely if ever hear heel clicks, because it takes a hard floor to initiate.
I never was into flip flops, until I moved to New Mexico. Its to fricken hot to wear anything else! Almost every single person I see has a pair on.. and rarely do I hear any annoying "Flop" sound.
i remember back in the 90's and in centuries prior that people in the united states wore shoes or at least something that covers the entire foot such as boots.
When 2000, and the years after, arrived i noticed that people started to wear flip flops not just to the beaches or to other swimming locations but anywhere considered informal. Daily, i have to endure simultaneously seeing the disgusting feet of some people in addition to hearing the sickening smacking sound that is made when the soles of the flip flops hit the ground and when people's foot soles smack their flip flop soles.
Do americans actually wear flip flops informally abroad when visiting other countries? I'd hate to think what is going through the minds of the people in host countries, especially in developed countries, when they see an american(s) walking down a street while creating those annoying flip flop smacking sounds that i mentioned in the paragraph above. Yeck.

Flipflops and flipflop wearers don't bother me. Flipflops are an affordable, comfortable, useful type of footwear that look fine in informal settings. I'm just happy that there are shoes people can actually afford during these rough economic times.

I don't know about where others live, but there are several thrift stores in our area, and that is where I get most of my shoes! Also, Wal Mart has very inexpensive shoes.
Couldn't imagine life without my flip-flops. Here in California I wear them year round, even in cold San Francisco. I like the air on my feet, it's relaxing.
