Also--congrats on your engagement! You should find pics and designers you like, within the budget you want to spend, and find shops that have those styles. Also, definitely try on stuff outside of your comfort zone...you may be surprised. I tried on a few different designers, including Willowby, before I made a decision. I'm going to stress budget though--you don't want to fall in love with something and then find out it's unrealistic for you to get.
First wedding dress was a sage green & off-white, empire waist, floor length PROM dress. We were paying for everything ourselves. Dress was off a clearance rack at a 3 Sisters. Wedding was in an aunt's living room. Last wedding took place on work break. Liscense was expiring...had to make a decision to marry or not. At the time, I was working an insurance debit & worked in pants suits with pockets (money, ink pens, etc.) On afternoon break, in my gray pantsuit, & his Sunday pants, we went to county judge's office, his secretary witnessed. Rounded up kids, had pizza & went back to work. Soon will be 41 year anniversary (pant suit wedding)!
I wore a white prom dress that I found on the clearance rack of 5-7-9 (remember them??) for $15. It was knee length in the front and tapered to a bit about ankle length in the back. My wedding colors were red, black and white so I had my bridesmaids come up with red or black outfits to wear. Between the wedding and reception I think we spent a total of $325 and this was back in 1992.
I didn't want a big wedding which is probably a good thing since we were pretty broke when we first met, lol.
We are still happily married almost 28 years later.

Your gown sounds beautiful.....but *expensive*. I want to stay in the $3000 to $4000 range for my dress.....my mom will help a little too with the veil & shoes.........
We won’t be having a religious ceremony.....so that’s why I can be a little freer & more contemporary with my dress *IF* I go that way.....laughs.....I’m liking vintage too like the edit: Pronovias Imelda Lace Mermaid at Nordstrom’s!

That’s the other thing— looking at pictures is a blast, but until you try one one you just don’t know. That perfect dress looks great on the model, but on you, it might not work. I have an odd ball body, and lots of things look goofy as anything on me.
That’s why I strongly suggest you find a shop with excellent seamstresses. If the bodice on the right size pulls, they’ll know if they have to size up or they can adjust.

I have a formal dress that is similar to the mermaid style fit & flare that looks good on me....that’s part of the reason I know I love that style...but ofc I will need to try many on, moving around & getting pictures from different angles....stuff like that to make sure it will photograph ok. I’m saving pictures on my phone for my appt so when I go in...they will know what I’m looking for.....

If you have access to a printer, I would do a wedding binder, printing out the styles you love. You'd be able to organize it as various styles like A-linbe; fit and flare/mermaid; ballgown, boho... I wouldn't even know how to save it to my cell organized in various folders unless I could upload to Picasa folders if they still have Picasa.

There are 2 wanderlust gowns I like. The one where she's sitting on the bench with the beading that falls on her arms and the one right after it.

Agree. I told her the same thing; she really needs to try them on.
There appear to be a lot of gowns that look more like a nightie/ sleepwear then a wedding gown. I thought Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding dress looked good on her but it's not what I'd call a wedding gown. Anyone can wear that gown to any event. It's not bridal to me. If you're going to get married and want a bridal wedding gown, get one that looks like a bridal gown; not like sleepwear.
