I'd pay that much for a refrigerator, maybe, but not a sweater! Not even 10 sweaters!

I tried to rep you again but they won't let me. We must have been separated at birth!

Once when I was just out of college and had moved to Houston without a job I started working at a Frost Brothers in River Oaks, one of Houston's old-money rich subdivisions. Frost Brothers was an upscale Texas department store. I was selling panty hose, but I wandered into the better dresses section and saw a linen dress for $1,200. The rent on the one-bedroom apartment I shared with a friend was $300/month so $1,200 truly was a fortune to me. I asked the saleswoman what made it so special and she looked at me sort of blankly and said it was made of very fine material and was well-made, or something like that. I couldn't see it then and can't see it now. To me, it's an "emperor's new clothes" situation. A designer manages to convince a small percentage of the population that his or her clothes are somehow worth 20 times more than other clothes and people go along with it because it makes them feel like they're worth more, I guess.

I can see the difference between really cheap clothes and well-made clothes that will last a long time, but there's no way a sweater is "worth" $1,600. IMHO, of course.

Loro Piana uses very exotic and expensive wools and cashmeres for her pieces, like baby cashmere.

A $1600 sweater would have to have a good designer label, be made of the finest of materials, be made in very limited quantities, and make the purchaser look like a million dollars while wearing it!

I was just reading about a $230,000 Chanel handbag with a diamond clasp that debuted a month ago. Nine orders have been placed for it so far.

Wow, I like Macy's but the Macy's I go to doesn't have $1600 sweaters. I would have assumed that the folks who buy $1600 sweaters do not shop at Macy's. Maybe that's why it was discounted.

Loro Piana is a family name, not a designer's name like Donna Karan.

Damn, girl, that's a $1000 in savings!

I like designer stuff but I buy it on sale. Retail is so overrated (imo).
