I think Russia is making a big mistake

Its one of the few successful US-russia partnerships
Wrong. The US mentality is that of paranoid lunatics. You don't need that type of person on any job. The future in space belongs to those who can work together aside from politics and has a civil policy. The real progress we will see will be from countries like Japan, France, Russia, China, Germany and others all working together to accomplish what needs to be done.

It's all a matter of engineering a balance.

Where the real problems will be is with our physiology.

We evolved in a gravity well. The physical problems can be minimized but we will need to build habitats big enough to spin to create the cheat for gravity (centrifugal force) in a way that our bodies are fooled into thinking it is normal.

Cooling of power systems, this is the number one issue, this is the energy of all projects.Galactic radiation, problem number two, survival. No gravity, number three..

With rotating structures, too, not everything is so simple. Think about how you will balance this farm? If everything is static and screwed to its place, then there is no problem, but people usually move around and move loads. That is, the mass balance will be constantly disrupted. How long do you think it will take for the rotating station to start writing out eights and other bisballance figures?

So-so works. Half of the launches are on Russian engines, and the manned ones are constantly postponed. And launch prices have increased several times (Where is Elon Musk with his cheap, vaunted launches?). And yes, oh no, shame on you, the Americans have again bought seats on the "Soyuz" for their astronauts. And at a high price, because it is urgent, because again they can not carry out a manned launch .

Angrily watching their customers disappear into the hands of SpaceX, the demise of the Soviet, oops I meant Russian, space program is a tough one for the hardened Putin lover to accept. The mighty Russian space program was reduced to shuttling astronauts on NASA's dime to the space station in hope that Russia would act like a normal partner in space. Nope, they absolutely refuse to act like a normal country in all matters now, and thusly rejected to sign up for Artemis despite our offer to let them contribute an airlock.

Instead the proud Russia will ride to glory of maybe sending a probe to the moon 25 years after it was first planned. A probe, not even with the ability to move... While the developed world is installing an orbiting station to supplant our moon base. Russia will look on as the real leaders in the world show them once again how its done. We'll see if Luna really gets going or Roscosmos keeps putting it off until China comes to their rescue.

US sought to exclude China from the international agreement on the Moon.

link

Both Moon programs are very early in their development with expressions of political agreement or intent. There's no major commitment of funding yet. Both agreements are non-binding. Building a base to extract minerals is going to prove much more daunting and time-consuming.

It would be more cost-effective to lift the sanctions on Afghanistan and North Korea. Move forward with economic exploitation of those regions.

Dreaming is good, yes. But when you understand the physics of the process, many projects turn into very unscientific fiction
