Sam..Basset Hound Mix...bath...once a month or so..more in the summer because he jumped in his pool all the time with the kids, they were never dry! I think that the key is brushing on a daily basis, good dog food, and a clean bed. I washed his bed every week or so in the washer, the cover.
The cats...once in awhile, not often. I recently bathed Jasper, he needed it. He is much fluffier now, with a nicer looking coat.
I have never bathed my short haired "terrier mix" in the last 4 years; she looks clean and smells clean and she sleeps with us....I also havent bathed my beagle girl who has been with us for the past year.....am I missing something.
I think some dogs just don't need baths very often, while others do.
My corgi is low to the ground, and gets really dirty if the ground is wet or muddy. Plus there's the "rolling in funky smells" thing that I mentioned earlier. Also, he has longer hair, but doesn't shed much, and the longer hair around his butt can get icky. So he gets a bath every month.
The dog with really short hair (she's some kind of terrier mix) is not low to the ground, and when it's wet outside, she might get a tiny bit of mud on her feet only, but it wipes right off. She has no long hair around her butt. So if she didn't have the "slobber" issue, I'd probably be able to bathe her like once a year.
My sister has a golden that insists in rolling around in any mud she finds; while other goldens can get away with a good brushing, she needs more baths.
Wow - reading this I see I'm definately in the minority here. Our dogs only get bathed if they decide to roll in something nasty. Other than that...I brush them regularly and they occationally go into the pool in the summer. No soap involved. Yeah - they smell like dogs but not to the point it reaches out and slaps you
I don't bathe my dogs unless they roll in something or get sprayed by a skunk.
Our dog (a mutt...we think a mix of beagle and pit bull...no one knows) gets a bath once a month or longer. He is intolerant to cold weather with his short coat (and in general he is a wuss :P) so we try to bathe him on the weekends after he goes outside so he can warm up in the house. He just shivers all the time even with 1000 blankets on and a doggy sweater we bought for him.
My old dog we used to bathe her every 3 weeks, she was a big dog and had very very thick fur. She loved baths though.
Very interesting to see all the different responses. Wish I could get away with bathing the dog as little as some of you.
My dog gets a bath every 2-3 weeks typically, or if she's found a nice mud puddle to roll around in that usually pushes up her next bath, lol. She's on good food and usually doesn't get that dirty between baths, but she still starts getting seriously whiffy at about the second week. She does have pretty bad breath some days so her smelliness could be coming from saliva left on her paws, legs, etc after cleaning herself off maybe?
