Poor Lulu has been scratching like crazy. I've been giving her the same grain-free food the rescue group was giving her but I was also giving her some treats that are not grain-free. I took her to the vet, who said he thinks it's just from dry skin. So I'm adding oils to her food and hoping he's right.

I washed all her blankets in hot water, in case it's a contact allergy.

In 45 years I havent had an itchy dog. I asked for prednisone but he wouldnt give it to me. He doesnt see how badly she's scratching 24/7. Poor gal. It hurts me to see her scratching like that. I hope the oils I'm adding to her food (emu oil and some fatty acid capsules) work quickly.

I hope it helps TFW. My sons dog has allergies and it is hard watching the poor dog scratch so bad. He would scratch until he was raw.

What is your son doing for his dog, lindarby? I can only imagine how miserable a dog must be to be so itchy. And Lulu whines when she's scratching, which makes me feel even worse.

From what I've read, the fatty acid oils, taken internally, may take at least a month to help -- and that's only if the cause is dry skin.

The oatmeal and aloe dog shampoo with which we bathed her as soon as we got her home has reviews saying that dogs got very itchy after using it. I've used it for several of my previous dogs, including Queenie, and never had a problem. But Lulu is a different dog.

The vet said he wouldnt give her prednisone unnless she scratches herself raw. I'm not willing to wait that long. I ordered some prednisone online from a source where I've been buying dog meds (many of which, like keflex and other antibiotics, can also be used for people) for 25+ years. I also started giving her Benadryl -- 1 mg per 1 lb of weight -- 3 times a day. The Benadryl does help her scratch a little bit less.

Yes, Flamingo, Benadryl is good for itching/scratching. But it's not so good as prednisone. It does make some dogs, but not all, sleepy.

The prednisone should arrive tomorrow. I'll continue to give the Benadryl for the first day, maybe two, until the prednisone has a chance to kick in. And I'll give the prednisone for about a week.

In the meantime, I need to figure out what's causing the itching. I dont want Lulu to be on any meds any longer than necessary. Again, I'm really hoping she doesnt have a grass allergy.

TFW, my son said the vet would give him a shot of cortisone every six weeks up to 4 shots. He gave him anti itch pills called hydroxyzine pam caps 50 mg that he took every four hours. Once the itching calmed down, he just gave them to the dog as needed. And a medicated shampoo that the vet gave him that had the vets name it so he doesnt know what it was. Also, we would rub gold bond medicated powder on him and he seemed to like that. Hope this helps you and Lulu.

Thanks SO very much, lindarby! The prednisone pills I ordered online arrived this morning. I may see if the vet in California from whom I've been ordering meds has cortisone shots and hydroxyzine pam caps available. And thanks for the info on Gold Bond medicated powder. I really appreciate it!
