Lots of people are using 3D printers to develop prototypes, and some are pretty good. But 3D printers are for prototyping, not mass production.

As we did in WWII, it would be the role of the federal government to coordinate selecting and licensing the best few designs to be mass produced by fabricators across the country. To reach the volume necessary (I roughly estimate 50 million masks per day to put the nation back to work), that would include companies that don't normally do such work converting factory space to handle it.

We did that during WWII, such as clock makers producing Norden bombsights.

But that takes federal direction and coordination, and we don't seem to have a White House capable of that kind of direction and coordination.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to let restaurants, movie theaters and malls open with limited capacity (25% capacity) Friday. https://www.texastribune.org/2020/04...s-greg-abbott/

In my opinion, he is quite measured in his approach. Abbott stressed his order "gives permission to reopen, not a requirement," and business can stay shuttered if they would like to.

I'm okay with the plan, although I would have preferred more time between Phase 1 and 2.

I hope this turns out to be a good decision. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Does this override Dallas County's shelter in place?

I consider the Phase One re-opening to be meaningless. It won't get the economy going.

It's better to be cautious and see what the true impact of a partial re-opening will do to COVID cases/deaths. If we open too quickly, we could very quickly see that backfire on us.

Slow and steady is the way to go.

Yes, it is. A backfiring would be worse. The Dow/Nasdaq/S&P 500 would freak out and shed a ton of value.
