I know we can probably buy pre-made gluhwein at places like World Market (we did in SC when we lived there), but does anyone know if any delis or festivals serve it during the holidays?

Check with the Christkindl Market in Arlington.

Arlington Christkindl Market | German holiday market in Arlington, Texas

Central Market sells bottled Sternthaler Nurnberger gluhwein.

Could check with SPEC's as they have a huge selection of wines, spirits, etc. Go to the one off Central Expwy / Walnut Hill.

Trader Joe's would be another place to check as they often offer seasonal wines, etc.

Not sure but Bavarian Grill in Plano is a really nice German restaurant and they either serve it or might know where you can find it locally.

Good Luck!

Bavarian Grill in Plano serves it.

I will never forget the first time I tried it. It was our first winter in DFW, and there was a terrible snow and ice storm. We were snowbound in our townhouse for what seemed like a decade. The city was only just beginning to come unthawed when we decided to toss caution to the (howling) wind and venture out to a restaurant.

We trudged through the snowy parking lot in our inadequate winter clothing and arrived shivering to this unassuming but warm and friendly place. Since it was a German restaurant I had pre-decided upon having a beer, a hefeweisen perhaps. But our waitress suggested right away (in a genuine German accent) that they had just made a batch of Gluhwein and that I should try it.

I heeded her advice. It tasted warm and delicious and unthawed my toes and cured a terrible case of S.A.D. I was developing in a matter of minutes.

Great stuff. I buy it from World Market when they have it, but I would also like to make my own. Does anyone have a recipe?

Here is one recipe for Glühwein… this is the recipe that the German government links to and it looks like it contains all of the ingredients one would expect to see in a recipe for the drink (i.e. - authentic-tasting), but I have not tried this recipe myself:

Mulled Wine (Gluehwein) – A must at your Christmas gathering : GERMAN WORLD MAGAZINE

Enjoy!
