I know Coppell High was rated academically unacceptable, but that doesn't mean much - you will find other threads here about how a few people in one subgroup can tank the whole school's rating. The more subgroups a school has, the more chances it will drop in the ratings. Fortunately, most people find diversity a plus and can examine the results without writing off the entire school.

Coppell High School was ranked 441st in the nation in Newsweek's list of the Top Public High Schools in America. Plano West was 186, Plano was 364, and Plano East 452.

We just moved from Las Colinas to Coppell and love it. It has a nice, small town feel, is very diverse, and all around is a great place to live. Most weekends there is some sort of town activity, there's a great Farmer's Market, fantastic parks for the kids, etc. It's also very close to Irving, Lewisville, and most major highways, making the drive to work much easier and more convenient.

Coppell is a great place to live. The schools are outstanding and there is pretty much anything you want to do within minutes. Coppell is not a large city with alot to do, so you don't have to worry much about outside traffic. It's a very safe place to live and like I said, the schools are excellent. However, it's a little too "white picket fence". People live in Coppell because of the schools; you don't have to worry about your child going to school with some kid whose dad sells drugs etc. There are alot of activities for the kids to do; ie., rec center, nature trails, tons of parks, etc. I love Coppell; but, kids sometimes need more than just great schools. If you want your kids to play in the dirt, you have to look for it here. What to do, what to do??!!!

Default Update in 2013? Plano vs. Coppell

So have you spent time in either? How did it turn out?

We've also been doing some research but would like to hear from people who are from either areas (ideally, having insight into both).

Like you, we're coming from East Asia (Japan). I'm a US expat, but my wife and kids (4) are Japanese.

Can anyone update their preferences with good reasons for one place over the other?

Both towns have good schools, good location and good resale but Plano has more amenities.
Some one mentioned Newsweek's ranking for 2007 so here are the latest rankings to use ...

"Only schools from DFW to make top 100 are : Dallas Magnets 2nd & 4th, North Hills Prep 14th, Highland Park 47th, Plano West 63rd. Some others who made the 1000 list are: Plano Sr 108, Colleyville 196, Southlake 210,Plano East 229, Coppell 429, Allen 651. Frisco and Prosper couldn't make the cut. Salutes to PISD for performing this well despite of high number of enrollment and economically disadvantaged students. Not to take it away from Dallas Magnet schools and North Hills but they have unfair advantage of being selective while others have to admit every one. Highland Park does natural selection by high real estate values. Three cheers to Planoites!!!"
