We are an interracial couple with the young daughters, three and seven. How is the diversity in Mesquite?

For a DFW suburb that isn't Garland, that's not bad. Garland would be more diverse, and the south burbs would have higher African-American populations.

When you say interracial, which races are you referring to? Obviously you are worried about whether your mixed children will be accepted or something?

Yes that is correct. We want our children accepted. I am white and my wife is black. Thank you for the information.

The entire DFW area is very diverse, don't see you having any issues.

I see, thanks. Yeah, Mesquite will be fine for your needs, since as pointed out, the black population is at about 13%.

Garland is more diverse in general, but has a smaller percentage of blacks.

As I said in my first reply, if you want a population that has more blacks you go to the south suburbs. For example, Duncanville is only 63.9% white and 24.76% black. So I bet you see more mixed kids there than you do in Mesquite, and way more than you do in the north suburbs.

But Mesquite is good choice for your family.

I think its separate Hispanics when we talk about demographics. For example, technically the city of Dallas is 56% white by race, but it is only 29% non-Hispanic white. Therefore by most standards the city of Dallas would work out to be:

43% Hispanic
29% White
23% Black
2.5% Asian

I live in Mesquite and the nicer part of Mesquite is alot more diverse than those stats show. I would guess the Creek Crossing area is about 40% white, 30% black, 20% hispanic and 10% other. There are 19 homes on my street and we have 2 interracial, 5 black, 8 white, 2 hispanic and 2 asian families on our street along. Your kids will have friends of all races in the city of Mesquite.

That is very accurate re: the demographics.

You will probably found the Creek Crossing area, and the surrounding newer developments nearby, very nice.

Looks like City Data updated their stats with the new census results. I remember seeing this thread months ago. Living a few blocks from Mesquite and doing business in the town often, I thought 73% white was extremely high for this area. Here are the new demographics:

White alone - 55,533 (41.6%)
Hispanic - 46,164 (34.6%)
Black alone - 23,154 (17.4%)
Asian alone - 6,129 (4.6%)
Two or more races - 1,280 (1.0%)
Other race alone - 929 (0.7%)
American alone - 167 (0.1%)

That seems much more accurate and represents Mesquite's diversity well.

I've only lived here on this side of town for two years. Has Mesquite really changed that much in a decade, or were the last census results possibly a little off?
