Anything between 75 and the Tollroad south of Parker Road in Plano all the way to Downtown Dallas is going to feel like "the city" - maybe you can't see skyscrapers from every street, but it's high-density housing on relatively small lots with A TON of traffic everywhere.

That's just Dallas for you.

Since you need public transportation, you'll be somewhat limited in choices outside Dallas/Richardson and parts of other suburbs. For instance, Grapevine and Coppell may have their own public busses, but they don't connect with those running to Dallas. Light rail (DART) extends to some places but not others. So it depends on what you need to have access to:

- What things do you expect to take a bus/rail to? Grocery store, mall, church, etc?
- How far is too far for you to walk/wheel to a bus stop or rail station?
- Describe what you "suburb" living means to you- wide open spaces, more nature, more white people, ??? I've learned on this board everyone has their own definitions in mind!

Living in the northern suburbs might not be the best option if an easy commute to the Medical Center area and access to public transportation are among your top criteria. Coppell might be a better bet in terms of commute, but I don't think it has a lot of town home type rentals. You might be better off inside the Dallas city limits near a DART rail or bus line if you want access to public transportation. My knowledge of the rental market in Dallas is limited, however, so I will leave suggestions for specific areas to more knowledgeable posters. Parts of Irving (Las Colinas area) might also fit your needs.

How about Brick Row in Richardson Spring Valley Rd just east of 75
Right next door to SV DART station
It"s new , one section is finished not too sure how gated it is or the rates
10 minutes from Medical City

FYI people, the location that the OP's husband will be working is at the former R.H. Dedman (and before that Brookhaven) Hospital. It is NOT near Medical City Dallas, Presby Dallas, Parkland, UTSW or any other hospital in the Dallas area. It is at the corner of LBJ and Webb Chapel and the DART rail does not even come close to it.

St Moritz is the townhouse complex next to the golf course. We moved out recently, so you might get our place .

Turnberry Isle across from the street is also nice but it is an apartment complex. The layouts are nice and some units face the golf course. We also lived there for some time.

Estancia was pretty expensive and the townhouses are too close to each other. The interior is very nice but expensive...

These are 1 block from the DNT and about 5 mins to 635 and 190. There is a really nice Walmart, DSW, Barnes Nobles and BestBuy within walking distance. Whole Foods, Sprouts, Target, Albertsons, Aldi, Galleria are all within 5-10 minutes. We really liked the location but bought a house somewhere else. The houses there are on the expensive side.

What? Along freeway corridors, yes. But the rest is pretty suburban to almost exburb looking in that part of Dallas. Especially between Hillcrest and Preston until you get down to Uptown/Oaklawn/Knox-Henderson. Yes its the city, but that's a little misleading.

Moving north of 635 won't give you any different feel than being south of 635. Dallas and the surrounding areas are exceptionally bland and uniform looking. You'd have to go very far north to get a different feel or escape traffic and "the city".

Edit: Could you give us a little more information about what area of town you'll be working? It would help us give better suggestions.
LOL! I'll jump on that bandwagon.......(major rant) people who live in Lakewood have no respect for other locations in the metro mess and I have yet to find a single area without some merits. Gotta wonder if some people bad mouth areas when they haven't been in them for more than 5 years.
