king's highway;
Thanks for your contributions! Do you remember the First bank of Garland building at 111 S. Garland Ave. being built around '63. It is currently a Chase bank and the tallest building in the city.
Thanks

Yes, the high rise, Garland Bank and Trust, was my parents' bank.

My first savings account [obtained during an elementary school field trip]
was at First National Bank on the Garland square. The building now is Synergy Bank.

Southern Bank at Ridgewood became Texas Commerce, then moved to Broadway
and is now Chase. The old Southern Bank building became a library.

Do you remember the huge Sears store on Ross Ave in Dallas ?
When I was a kid, it was a treat to go there.

How about Lochwood shopping center on Garland Rd in Dallas ?

How about Big Town Mall [wasn't it the first mall in the area ?]

Yea, the library building started life as Southern Bank and Trust. My very first checking account I had in high school was there, and I bought a repoe'd '67 Mustang from them. Next door, where the Jack in the Box is (First and Kingsley), was an old Sinclair service station. The day I was registering for enrollment in the 7th grade at nearby Memorial Jr. High, a friend and I were walking home and were at a convenience store (that became Baskin Robbins) just to the west, when we heard a horrific crash. A dump truck t-boned a car that had a woman and a small child in it. The force of the crash drove the car into the driveway of the service station (it may have been vacant then), and the sand in the truck shifted and filled the car's interior with sand. The woman was clearly dead, up to her neck in sand, but the passenger side wasn't and there was a crying child - maybe 2 years old in there. My friend crawled into that car and handed the baby to me; it was covered with blood but alive and wailing. I'll never forget that experience. Weird, but about 15 years later, my best friend's sister had a wreck in the same intersection that killed her son.

Big Town Mall was indeed the area's first enclosed mall (one of the first in the U.S. I believe). My mom loved to shop there with her sister and they would drop me and my cousin off at a little kiddie theatre where we watched cartoons while they shopped. Great snack bars too with good soft serve ice cream. I vividly remember the signs for "colored" and "white" labeling the water fountains and rest rooms upstairs near Montgomery Ward.

king's highway:
Big Town Mall opened in 1959 in Mesquite. I believe it was the only air conditioned mall in the area before Northpark opened in 1965. When it opened Northpark was the largest climate controlled shopping center in the world. Am I correct that the Garland Bank and Trust building opened in 1963? Or was it much earlier? I have posted a picture of the building.

Thanks,
JH

I don't remember exactly when the bank was built.

Garland Bank and Trust was briefly mentioned
in a 1964 FBI report to the Warren Commission.

Anyone remember the Underwoods BBQ restaurant on Garland Rd in Dallas ?

My parents and I used to go there about once a month... yummm.

That was back when going out to eat was really a treat.

The mgr. of Underwood's was a guy named Raymond, who bought it out and ran it for many years. About 5-6 years ago, a Chinese family bought out Raymond and still run it under his name. I still eat there from time to time - many of the old Underwood's recipes have survived. But alas, the crowds are gone and I'm afraid it may soon be history. Probably the best barbecue beans in Dallas.

I'm pretty sure the pickle plant was located where the U-Haul center is now, in that old brick 2-3 story building. Man that place did stink when we drove by it way back then.
