SATURDAY OCTOBER 29, 2011 STORM UPDATE::

NAM was the last model to be far enough away...It has just pulled closer to the coast... Inevitable now... ALL MODELS AGREE...

Exact track, Temps & precip amount can change within hours of storm but I will still wait until 6pm or the watches come out. Insane

I just read the lastest NWS discussion…they seem to really be pulling back from saying anything substantial is in store for Saturday.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NEW YORK NY
458 PM EDT THU OCT 27 2011

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

09Z SREF...12Z GEFS AND THE DETERMINISTIC MODELS WERE INCLUDED IN
THE LOCAL FORECAST EXCEPT FOR ALL ETA MEMBERS OF THE SREF WERE
DISCOUNTED AS WELL AS THE 12Z NAM. PTYPE DUE TO BOUNDARY LAYER TEMPS
IS THE MAJOR FORECAST ISSUE...THUS THERE IS HIGH UNCERTAINTY IN
MESOSCALE DETAILS. HERE`S MY THINKING... 1. THIS IS A HIGHLY
ANOMALOUS EVENT WHERE SIGNIFICANT LATE OCTOBER SNOW HAS NEVER BEEN
OBSERVED ON THE COASTAL PLAIN PER THE 1ST ORDER CLIMATE STATIONS.
EVEN INLAND
...SCANS OF THE COOP DATA SHOWS THAT ACCUMULATING SNOW IS
ALMOST UNHEARD OF. 2.
MOST PCPN IS IN THE AFTN AND SOLAR RADIATION
WILL LIKELY KEEP TEMPS ABOVE FREEZING
AS CHANGE TO SNOW OCCURS. 3.
LASTLY...I COULD NOT FIND SUPPORT OF SFC TEMPS BEING BELOW FREEZING
IN ANY OF THE PROFILES I EXAMINED
. THUS...IN COLLABORATION WITH HPC
WINTER WEATHER DESK AND SURROUNDING WFO`S...WE HAVE LIMITED SNOW
ACCUMULATION TO HIGHER INLAND ELEVATION AND ONLY ALLOWED FOR SLUSHY
TRACE AMOUNTS ON THE COAST
- MOST OF WHICH WOULD OCCUR BETWEEN 5 AND
8 PM.

Northern Litchfield should be seeing flakes mixed in at this moment... Very impressive map for October.

All snow right now in Southington and south Windsor... I think people who have a long commute this evening are going to do a triple take when they see snow in their headlights.

Impressive radar! Temps dropping hard now real feel in mid 30s.

Just an FYI for those upstate – we on the Connecticut coast made it all the way down to close to freezing last night. It looks like Long Island was not too far from frost as well. Officially, I had the first frost in my garden since March 30th…my low was 31.7 F, so it seemed to not be a hard freeze. The lowest hourly obs I could find for the coastal cities were 36 F at New Haven, 34 F at Groton…and 35 at Bridgeport, but that might not have been their lowest temps. This frost was actually pretty close to our climatological frost on the coast = which is October 25th.

I thought the avg timing for the first frost is October 15, and last is May 15.

Nothing to report thankfully...all looks normal in the near future. rain showers, 50s, maybe a 60s, lows in 40s... Next rainstorm would be around November 9th but right now nothing big. There's actually a coastal storm going OTS on Tuesday... PHEW!! Lets hope the snow melts so we can enjoy Autumn.

I still cant get over that with water temps well in the 50's (over 60 in Atlantic City!) you can still get snow right to the coast. Amazing
