Here's Bridgeports Decembers Avg temp departure from normal (1991-2020).

Out of the last 12, only 3 were below normal.

And only 2 were above normal from 2000-2010

Time to flip again?

I thought 2022 was actually below normal, or did the late-month torch flip it?

My coldest morning since March 31st (7 and half months)....my temp went down to 27 F. There were mid 20's deep into southern Connecticut it looks like

The very dry air and bright sun is helping to move temps up now, into the upper 30's inland and low 40's F near the coast:

That's pretty cold. I know once you get into NW CT those elevations go up too.

The recovery this afternoon has really only been modest. I looks like the coastal stations will not crack 50 F, as of 3 PM obs New Haven and Danbury are the warmest at 47 F:

Ugh, I checked the file and that December was the only december that had an error. THANK YOU. Updated. Everything the same except December 2022. IT WAS below normal.

Still... Only 3 out of the last 9 Decembers has been below normal. Or 4 out of 12.

Places as close as southern Vermont get 90 - 100 inches of annual snowfall. Also the coast of Maine still gets 70 to 80 inches of snow. At the other extreme, look at parts of southern Conn/southern Rhode Island, they get less than 1/3 that amount. I thought it was interesting.

Did you post the map? I don't see it

As for the temperature map (which I did see), this is much more pronounced on the west coast, where the normal west to east flow of the jet stream makes coastal temps warm than the equivalent east coasts at the same latitude combined with much higher mountains being closer to the coast than in the east.

From what I understand of it, the West Coast climates are warmer (in winter, cooler in summer) than their East Coast equivalent at the same latitude (although this effect fades some as one move into lower latitudes) do to the on-shore flow of mild oceanic air in winter. The winds are on-shore in winter on the West Coast, they are off-shore on the middle/upper East Coast in winter. I suppose this is indirectly caused by the prevailing jet in winter.

I can't find the map I posted, but here is an even better snowfall map of the upper Atlantic states from the NCDC Public Info site. It shows well how annual snowfall decrease from north to south quickly. Excluding MT tops, notice how parts of Maine /northern NY get 80 to 100 inches of snow annually (light blue) and how the numbers fall in a south-southeast direction. Central NY and central VT/NH average 60 to 80 inches of snow annually, but this quickly falls to 20 to 40 inches across Connecticut, New Jersey and southern Rhode Island. Parts of coastal Delaware and Maryland get only 10 to 20 inches annually.

I think the map shows that in terms of annual snowfall, not only does the ocean and elevation have an impact, but even latitude as well.

I operate from memory, not figures. Also, 2020 may not be right, Didn't we have about 20" of snow, at pretty cold temperatures, mid-month?
