Lots of info/stats to digest...just amazing stuff.

Putting aside the below freezing streak... Today will make it 6 days in a row NYC staying under 25°F. That will be the 2nd longest streak on record since 1872 tied with 4 other years. The High Temps have been impressive!

Yup, record low of 9° for them yesterday, 7° this morning.

Will update this afternoon... right now a non event for us. (0-2"). A shift west by 50 miles and we can get 6"+

Impressed with the 6 day streak. I noticed NWS now predicts a high of 26 tomorrow (they had it lower yesterday), so it may stay a tie with those 4 other years, but still impressive.

BTW, 9 is not a record low (I imagine the newer stations may have had record lows) because of 1962 and 1917. 1962 had a low of 4, but that was in the morning and it "warmed up" to 11 (actually a drop from a high of 13) at the ball drop. But if you throw out the super super cold 1917, 9 was a ball drop temperature we may not see again in our lifetime, though as you like to say, if one is patient, "never say never" with weather. As I noted in the weather forum, high temperatures are similar to history but low temperatures tend to be higher today. After Feb. 2015 went without a subzero in Central Park, making 21 years, I was halfway convinced we may never see another subzero there and then a year later one kind of "snuck in", so you never know.

The predicted high in NYC of 12 for Friday and 13 for Saturday is impressive. While there have been highs below 10 before, it is very rare (has happened 10 times, last time in January of 1985 and last time before that in February of 1934, and 2 of the 10 times were during that really extreme cold streak this time of year in 1917/18), so even highs in the low teens are not something you see often.

I'm not sure I want a bomb of a storm close to us with temps like we have. Losing power is not something you want to imagine right now without backup.

Canadian model has a Blizzard Thursday with snow falling from South Carolina to Maine as the storm is close to the coasts..

GFS says NO. Stays far enough off shore where we just get couple inches.

Crunch time now. 3 days away.

Thanks. It's lowest of the month, not the record.

Coldest December low since 1989 but I'm sure you mentioned that already. lol

Kinda interesting I'm not seeing Feb 2015 much when that was impressive itself. This seems more and I agree this seems to be happening more recent years and we wonder if it could be the new winter norm

Actually, as I thought and did say here, all the other tri-state stations (which didn't exist in 1918 and include BDR), did break if not shatter records. LGA, BDR, and EWR's prior record was from 1963 (with at tie at EWR in 1997), ISP's and JFK's are from 1968 (my first New Year's! I read that my first New Year's Eve the night before was the last time heavy snow fell at the ball drop.....and that even flurries did not fall on them again until 2009.....I of course don't remember that day but my parents have a picture of me dressed as a 1968 "New Years baby" LOL).

Also found out that Buffalo, NY had it's first ever subzero New Year's Day at -3....previous record was 0 set 3 times, in 1970, 1918 and 1881. And for all the BOX stations (including BDL), it was the coldest December since 2000 (while still 2.5 degrees below normal, warm spell early in month made NYC's average of 35.0 only the coldest December since 2010):

Regarding Thursdays storm-per the NWS discussion- "the overall probability for a light snowfall event is increasing. Have increased pops to chance west and likely east based on GEFS/ECWMF ensembles probs for 1/10th inch QPF over the region late Wed Night into early Thu Night. As mentioned in scenarios above, potential for a heavy snow (mixed precip?) event is still in play, but a lower probability scenario at this point".

So as of right now, snow is likely, while a significant snow seems less likely, but still possible. Models should start eliminating certain scenarios with this bombing low tonight. They'll be refined- maybe Tuesday we start to see snow maps? I for one hate to have all this cold without the snow. Sadly the only certainty over the next week is bitter cold (with a LOL- warmup on Wed with upper 20's highs).

Looking forward to whatever happens, per usual!

Crunch time now. 3 days away.

Widespread long term power outages are unlikely due to how light the moisture content of the snow will be and that all the leaves are off of the trees. The worst storms for losing power are freezing rain storms. Just ask quebec back in 1998. Homes were out for a month in the middle of the winter in quebec.. Average high/low in quebec city is comparable to the top of 4000 foot peaks in northern new england.
