I was just looking up some local readings and I think even more incredible than the chill is the desertish humidity right now.

I though it was amazing seeing Central Park is 12% but even locations right on the water are that low! (JFK is at 12% RH, BDR at 14%!). I wonder how often the RH has been THAT low there, I once read somewhere that the all-time record for Central Park (not as near the water) was something like 7 or 8% and I remember a day last spring (or maybe a couple of years ago) when Central Park was at 9% RH and I think BDR and JFK were still in the low 20s humidity-wise.

I was going to comment also on the extreme dryness. I'm in the Boston area today, dewpoint is -19 F with air temp of 31 F. Incredible.

Lets come back to this post in 4 months and compare these desert or arctic like afternoon dewpoints to a Tropical like humid day.

incredible for a March afternoon. Sub Zero!

Normal dewpoint for today is in the mid 20s. Extreme is -1. So we are breaking records for today. But I see the all time March extreme is -20s.

5pm Waterbury feels like 14 degrees. Teens on Long Island too. I don't know how Northern New England does it.

Ok, you ready? Lets use Hartford and find the Arctic blasts this winter and into Spring...

Actual temps Dec-Jan-Feb-Mar Finding the obvious Arctic blasts looks like we had

3 in December, actually was 2. 1 was lengthy then we had a fluke spike with the temps I believe a storm went towards the great lakes on the 18th.

2 in January

1 in February

1 in March so far

Now... looking at the Upper level flow and pattern for those times... You can see each time the trough was dug out in the East.

December 15th looks most impressive actually with the Vortex the furthest south.
January 30th had the jet dig south the most.
March 4th had an Upper Low over New England actually. 500dm but looks unimpressive.

That leads me to the 850mb temps. I forgot to pull those maps. Whoops. To be continued?

Last thing.... Actual data highlighted with max and min departures... Now you tell me... Which Arctic blast had the most negative departures?

December 2016

Jan - Feb - March

March 2017 had 2 days with big negative departures on the max temps. The others didn't. Jan 8-9 did but not as deep.

So conclusion? This Arctic blast March 3-5 was the coldest of the season but the Mid December one lasted the longest.
