Schools are closing early... sometimes it's so silly, for example:

Wilton Public Schools will dismiss early today, January 31. WHS and Middlebrook will dismiss at 10:30, Cider Mill at 11:30 and Miller-Driscoll at 12:30. All After-School Activities are cancelled.

Why in the world should everyone go in and then leave at 1030.. talk about a waste of time, gas, $$

And yup, sodium chloride has no chance up against calcium chloride:

- CaCl2 is nearly twice as soluble in water as NaCl -- melting range becomes increasingly depressed as the amount of impurity increases
- CaCl2 has a high negative elthalpy change of solution (releases energy when dissolved) -- NaCl has a positive elthalpy change of solution (requires energy to dissolve)
- Calcium ion forms an aquo complex with water (six molecules) as a ligand -- the aquo complex formation is nearly three times as exothermic as the most simple dissociation of calcium chloride
Cool info! Thanks! I like when my cousin talks about road sensors and the actual road temps. Wish they had them on each road or available to public. Cool to hear about.

Ok, lets get this out of the way first......

February 5-6 Storm Update:

Well...... I might not need updates anymore. Storm still there on the map but a little detail we needed has changed and that change means nothing big for us now.

The 2 systems were shown to merge together to give us a snowstorm....now..... all models keep those systems SEPERATE!

Still 5-6 days away so lets see if anything changes but this has been the new trend. in fact hand it to the Euro because the Euro never liked the big storm idea much.

Latest snowfall forecast for today

I-84 North could get 3"+ from this. Temps in teens and 20s this morning so wont take much liquid falling to accumulate. 1/4" liquid at 15:1 ratios = 3.75" of fluffy snow.

Current temps and Radar. Snow still over PA so wont start in CT till around lunchtime.

The clipper itself is still over Michigan but the snows are ahead of it. High over New England helping with the cold air in place.

if that was the case, schools would just take a snow day, not dismiss early.

The WTNH list is a lot bigger.....looks like everyone but Greenwich is having an early dismissal. Interestingly looks like no one in adjacent Westchester has declared anything yet.

And as someone else said earlier, it's all about makeup days. Districts are required to be open 180 school days or they lose some funding. However, even being open just until 10:30am will make it count as one of those days.

I noticed schools were closing around the state early today and of course I went into work so I may leave early depending. The funny thing is the news reports 1-4" statewide instead of 1-3 here and 3-5 there which is unusual. Seems they are not yet sold on the amounts which can be heavier locally. To me there is a fairly big difference between 2" and 4" when you are talking about driving and plowing.
